VS-100 Loses S/Pdif Sync

I ran into a problem last night and I thought I'd see if anyone had seen a similar issue.

I tried connecting a Motif XS to the VS-100 running in standalone mode using the S/PDIF connection.  It sounds great, but I started hearing occasional crackling noises.

I tracked it down to a very repeatable sequence.  When I play a medium to loud passage on the Motif and release, i.e. the keyboard output goes to silence, the VS-100 loses sync.  The display shows it going through the re-sync process and sync is regained in about two seconds.

I haven't had much time to determine if the problem is with the Motif or the VS-100.  But there are no postings on motifator.com for this issue and my engineering background tells me that the s/pdif clock recovery on the VS-100 is probably having problems when the datastream goes silent.

Has anyone else seen this?

    Hi, MurMan!

I just tried your setup by connecting my XS8 to VS-100 in stand-alone mode via S/PDIF and everything seems to work perfectly fine. I am not getting any messages about re-sync or anything else VS-100 display.

I tried Full Concert Grand as well as several Pipe Organs and all the time after I stop playing everything goes to silence and levels on display just go down.

Let me know, if you would like me to try something else.

Thanks, Iaroslav, for checking this out.  At least there's nothing fundamentally wrong with this setup.

It could be the cable that I'm using.  I thought it was a 75 ohm cable based on its thickness, but it doesn't have any markings on the jacket.  Somewhere in the bottom of a box is a real 75 ohm cable ...

Found a 75 ohm cable.  Two feet long, unfortunately, but OK for a test.

The VS-100 still loses sync, but not on every try now.

But, I found another way to make it fail everytime: Connect, play something (one note ppp is all it takes), and let it go to silence.  Then, rotate the Main Mix control.  It loses sync.  It's not a loose connection because if I connect, but don't play anything, and rotate the Main Mix, it does not lose sync.  I can flex the cable and move the gear around, and it's solid.  Since the Main Mix is a digital encoder, it might be firmware problem.

Think I need to call support.

I'll play with Main Mix control more tonight, but I think I did it yesterday because at the beginning there was no sound in my headphones and I had to turn all related knobs up and down several times until I get proper level...

I did some more tests, but only when I turn VS-100 on, connected to XS8, I am getting "Coaxial Clock 44.1kHz" message (right after the VS-100 Logo screen). Then unit never shows it or anything similar. Just in case, I have VS-100 v.1.30 and XS Firmware v.1.51.3.

I have the same problem with a VG-99 guitar processor, with all firmwares, but a bit better since 1.19.  All I have to do is turn down the volume on my guitar and the VS-100 looses sync. Turn up volume, sync returns in a few seconds. Changing patches does it sometimes, sometimes not.

Cakewalk have confirmed the bug with a VG-99 they borrowed, but have not fixed it yet, to my knowledge anyway. Since you are only the second person to point this out in almost a year, I suppose you shouldn't hold your breath for a fix anytime soon.

It's too bad, the VS would have been the perfect tool for me. I still use it, but this problem makes the s/pdif input totally useless for me.

Hey, CW could we have a bit of news on this? Even an explanation why it can't be fixed would be better than nothing. Or is it just that hardly anybody is complaining?
