VS-700 Roundtrip Latency

Hey everybody,

Just wanted to know what kind of roundtrip latency y'all are seeing with the VS-700. I'm about to build a setup for a friend, but it's crucial that we run full input monitoring on all channels....

Thanks for any info!

Nobody? Not even from Cakewalk? I guess this thing is not suitable for low latency input monitoring?

Hi Ricardo It is the situation where if you want full input monitoring through Sonar then the latancy performance is going to depend on the speed and the power of the computer. You may even find that even so the latency might not be be totally acceptable.

Now inside the VStudio system is a little software program that runs and it is called the direct mixer. So the direct mixer allows you to monitor all you inputs on the VS700R (and Fantom and ARX extensions etc) direct to main or sub outputs. There is no latency there and it is super fast and perfect for input monitoring. It is not fancy though and you cannot setup multiple headphone mixes or add reverb while tracking etc..(IMO the direct mixer could use a boost in features similar to PatchMix on the EMU soundcards) But it does get the job done.

If you want even more versatility the ideal thing is to run a digital mixer prior to the VS700R even. I had the V Studio for a while and used a digital mixer. The digital mixer gives you all the headphone mixes and effects you want for tracking etc. But even without the V studio the digital mixer can do many jobs similar to the V Studio. With the V Studio it is a very poweful setup. But V studio is good on its own as long as you are happy with the features of the direct mixer. Check the manual etc..

I don't have the "stats" right in front of me. I'm running ASIO in 32 bit Win 7 Home Premium on a Q6600 2.4 with 4Gb of RAM with 256 buffers and 4.3ms latency. I can't even hear the latency. I never use direct monitoring, I always listen to Master outs. I've always beleived that roundtrip latency figures are a bit deceiving. Unless you're mixing your output back in, input monitoring has been sufficient.

    Jeff,
I can never go back to NOT using full input monitoring on tracking; there's just no substitute for running everything, headphones mixes and all, through all the EQs and other plugs. Even a lowly Dual Core i3 will run 24 inputs with 4 headphone mixes with ease.

In my opinion, this VS-700 should have come with a PCI-E card; some newer system can run at 32 sample buffer sizes and it's only gonna get better. I would have settled for around 5-6ms round trip.....

    Hey Rico,

The new 2.0 driver brings the RTL down to 7.4ms at a 48 sample buffer. At a 64 sample buffer you get 9ms RTL, etc.

This have been my problem / challange as well... its also a pity that the same direct mix can not be routed only trough 3 stereo output. So im disapointed of the VS700R because of this

Today i recived the Octa Capture, this unit has all this benefits :-) so if you dont need the Fantom VS i would go for one or two octas.

I have not tried the latency on the octa Capture on my PC but on my IMAC / logic its 4 ms  - The direct mix works fine with the included reverb :-)

That's getting close...  Wonder how stable that is with high track counts.... Still, my ancient Motu 2408 setup beats the pants out of it; isn't that kinda strange?

10ms is 1/100 of a second. Can you really hear that small a delay?

The Windows operating system has to do a lot of things simultaneously. It has to handle mouse input, draw the screen, handle network IO, handle the VS-700 input and output audio streams and perform mixing and VST plug-in data processing. A value less than 10ms for roundtrip latency doesn't seem too bad. I am not sure how something else could beat that given that the measurements accounted for everything and were not apples compared to oranges. The latency number has become a single simplistic number to describe what is really a complex interaction of timings. If you test a VS-700 at the 10ms round trip latency level and can hear the delay, then of course that is important. Otherwise it might be pure speculation based on the simplistic latency metric. As you point out, the real test is running with a reasonable track count and seeing if the latency is detectable by your ears.

It's reported that the VS 700 R is at the bottom of the table concerning efficiency/performance in comparison to the best usb interfaces. (approximately 30 % worse)

But as cdickey said, to the extent we cannot feel discomfort...

    concerning

is there a place I could see said test results? I must say I wish it was a little more efficient with my limited laptop, but the gains of integration automation far outweigh the slight latency.. Also I plan to get a OptiCapture device.. I also would like to get X1 but am waiting until they update the VS-700 for pure integration, as the integration is more important to me than the new interface.. though Pro Channel does look interesting...

Reported where? I'm running at 4.3 ms, can't even hear it at 6 ms.

I like it. I'm waiting for VS700 updates for X1 also. Try bouncing a clip to clips with the Pro Channel on if you want to see the effect of the Pro Channel. Remember to turn it off after the bounce.
