VS-700 and Octa-Capture on X79 platform.

Hi all

Is anyone using a VS-700 on a X79 platform ?

I have the VS-700 on a 3930 but when ever I drop the Asio buffer size to 64 the latency is so bad and all the lights flash on the VS700r ( This was never the case on my old X58 System )
Roland have checked out my VS-700 and there is no issue that would cause this.

With the Octa-Capture on a 3930 I have no issue at Asio buffer size 64  but when it is brought down to 32 I get the same issue as  with the VS700R when set to 64 buffer size
One last thing I have found is that the Octa-Capture causes so much latency unless the reduce cpu load button is ticked this is but if this has to be ticked I can then never use the VS-700 and the Octa-Capture together.

This has been tested on windows 7 and 8

All audio tweeks are done and Latency Mon is ok apart from it sometimes flags up the Octa-Capture Driver at 800+us ( not often )

So my question is are there any of you out there running a X79 Chipset and Sonar X2a with the VS-700 or Octa ?

Hope someone can tell me if they are

    Hiya Norrie,
this isn't some oddball USB driver issue is it?
Hope you can get it sorted mate...

    Hi Norrie

I have been using the VS-700 and the Octa-Capture VERY successfully with the new DAW since November 2012 which got an Asus Sabertooth X79 inside, i7-3930K (6x3.2GHz), OC to 4 GHz (got no clue if that's the same or at least similar to your stuff, though).

I run at low latency settings (ASIO buffer @ 48 samples) and never bother to increase as I haven't had any issues with it, once the system was properly set-up.

However, I remember having 2 issues initially ... let me try to dig those threads out ...

#1- first of all, you need to have the latest firmware and drivers on both gadgets; you might have missed an update for the Octa-Capture in October 2012 (I only found it by coincidence) which fixed the performance issues I had on the old DAW, with synchronisation not properly working (http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2706131)

#2 - on the new DAW, initially the graphic card didn't fit the system; once replaced performance was OK down to buffer sizes of 96 samples but stupid me had forgotten to set the VS-700 to proper sync mode (DIGITAL 1) so that the Octa-Capture is the master (http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2723796)

    I hope that helps

I have and do use both together but I have to check to see what platform I am on - I have experienced any problems once getting everything sync as FreeFylBertl had expressed.  Now you have me wondering what  platform I am on???

    Thanks for the Replys guys,
Rob that's a similar set up to mine my system is in my sig.

I should have said at the start I have not got as far as using the 2 units together

@ Mully and Rob.... Long time no speek guys.

If I use the vs-700 at 48 samples then the audio just breaks up and I get a light show on the vs-700 like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH8ejnvMDvI

If I use the Octa on its own I have to enable the reduce cpu load button or i can not use the unit at all.

The system I have has been built by a DAW building company here in the uk and they have been great they have tried loads of different mobos in the hopes that one of them will have no issues but each time there is the same results.

I have had the VS-700 into Roland for repair due to them not understanding why the light show owuld be at that sample rate they swaped out the main board to make sure of no issues but everytime I put the Octa or VS on a x79 system this happens.

This has also been tested with the stock cpu speed an double checked all chipset drivers mobo drivers hardware firmware is up to date etc.

Hey Norrie it's interesting in the video that all those outs are flashing like they are like the 700 is receiving what must be the noise etc and it's sprinkled across the various outputs.

I have to wonder about the drivers and (as a long shot) the USB cable to the 700. Next on the list is the mobo settings if available for FSB or on board drivers. Something is not tweaked right or there is a hardware issue .....that light show just looks wrong on so many levels but does tell a story.

Tricky one to resolve though...with some users here having similar hardware, you may be able to share some performance numbers to see what's loading up or melting at those settings....

Cheers mate, hope you are well.

    Norrie:
I'm not sure it this will help you but I get a similar "light show" as in your video, with my Motu HD 192 when a project forces a sample rate  change.  This used to happen in X1 but is gone in X2a.  I always see this in Pro Tools 10 when the previous project opened was say 44.1 and the one I am trying to open is 88.2.
Hopefully this will point you in a new direction.

    Norrie,

I'm splitting my head trying to think what could be causing this; really odd video ...

Assuming you checked all the complex issues, maybe we need start getting Mr.Murphy out of the picture. So here some basic questions:

From your description I read that everything works fine with either unit (VS-700, Octa-Capture) for ASIO buffers greater than 64, but below that light show starts. Did I get that right? What happens if you run at the lowest buffer that is OK, but then load the system heavily? Does the light show start up, or do you just get drop-outs? I'm asking cause that "reduce CPU load button" sort of hints that some internal buffer or the USB buffer bandwidth might be a bottleneck.

I assume you still have a true USB 2.0 port on that new MOBO? 3.0 is known to cause troubles. Tried sticking some 20€ USB 2.0 PCI card in there?

Is everything set to same sample rate settings (drivers, Sonar, VS-700, Octa-Capture)?

What happens if you use a different software (e.g. Kontakt player) and run that at low ASIO buffers?

I assume the situation persists with only the VS-700 & PC connected, but all other cables removed, including VS-700C?

Could you post screen dumps from latency mon, drivers tab, sorted descending, healthy higher buffer situation vs. light show??

    Rob
