VS-700C and win 10

Hei- have been out of the game for some years, but heading back now with Sonar and my beloved console VS-700C.

I see there is no easy way of getting my 700C to work with win 10 (which is already installed) - and have tried some of the tips here on the forum.
I have not upgraded the firmware, and not the drivers - so I wonder where to start. It seems to me that to upgrade the firmware I need to have the new drivers installed, and to install the newest drivers I need to have upgraded the firmware first.  Is that correct - and if so - what do I do?

Use the 8.1 edit posted in this forum to install on 10. Once installed, you can update the firmware as normal.

I'm actually afraid to upgrade to windows 10 and the latest version of sonar for fear that something else in the VS 700 won't work anymore. So I just sit tight on X3 and widows 8 where I am.

upgrading to Platinum is fine - can't say much about win 10 other than that I stick to win 7 for as long as possible to avoid driver issues

Maybe one of the wonderful VS-700 system users who had a successful driver modification experience to Win10 could put together a step by step tutorial for us non computer programmer types. Then I think I would delve into this a little deeper if it was a little more idiot proof. I don't trust myself to do the driver mod as described. I'd hate to render my tool useless and I would like to reap the benefits of the updated os. Just a suggestion

Where should I begin posting my questions, if I take the plunge......I will need some support when I hit a wall, and I would hate to have to wait a day or two for someone to answer a question while I'm trying to work through the issues. And for the record.......I'm a carpenter, not a computer programmer. (Not trying to sound snarky)

Let's start with where my system currently sits. I'm running Windows 7 home premium and the instructions are based from a system running Win 8.1

Correct but you'd be doing this within Windows 10. You'll just get the 8.1 drivers, open up the file in notepad and find where the part is you need to replace with the information posted on that page. The reason is that the 8.1 drivers are the most recent and have the most in common with Windows 10.

Do I uninstall both 700 & 700C drivers?
Do I need to uninstall the I/O Editor?

Step 2 mentions "transferring" my copy of 700 v2.02 to the desktop. Is this just a matter of copying the folder to my desktop?

When modifying the .inf do I include the brackets [ ] shown around the text?

Yes, you should always clean install drivers.
You'll want to keep the I/O Editor installed though.

Correct. Move it to the desktop

You'll want to copy it exactly as it is, brackets and all. You'll see what it looks like once you open the file in notepad. It's pretty similar.

Thanks Terra, just so I'm clear, I just have to move the .inf file to the desktop? And a stupid question.......how do I open it in notepad? Maybe just a little more clarification on this part and I should be ready for the big plunge.

I've done the backup / disk image of my system so I should be ready to disembark from Windows 7 and head over to Win 10 where I hope to see my VS-700 on the other side.

Move the whole file you download to the desktop and unzip it there. Just go through the folders till you find it.Right click, open with, notepad is how you do that.

After some issues upgrading to Win.10 I finally made it. Now.......
I've downloaded the 2.02 drivers and moved them to the desktop.
Then I extracted them and went through the file.
I found the RDIF1089.inf file and edited them.
Once edited and saved, do I keep the extracted folder on my desktop and run setup from there?
Does the folder eventually end up where it needs to be?

Question.....I ran into some issues with win 10 and needed to reinstall it. I still get audio but my vs console is not working......does this sound like I need to reinstall the drivers or are my control surface settings messed up. Could somebody list the input and output settings that need to be checked off? I've been scratching me head for a while now and can't seem to get it right?
For some reason when I'm I preferences>control surfaces under add new controller it does not list the vs-700 but it is listed under in ports and out ports. Hmmmm

I need to add that in my cakewalk shared surfaces file there is no mention of my vs-700 or a .dll file like the mackie controller is listed. I get audio, but the console seems to be on another planet. Buttons are very inconsistent but faders work with no motor function. Sounds like I need to un and reinstall my drivers.....anyone?

You need to make it a mackie control surface.

Just assign that as my controller and set inputs and outputs to VS-700C ?
Before my computer problem the VS-700 was listed as a recognized control surface and now its gone for some reason. btw....Thanks for helping.

Yah, I'm not sure whether that was a Cakewalk thing or a Roland thing but it won't come up as its own surface name anymore.

It is very quirky. When I did the initial update to win10 and the driver install it worked like it did before in win7.... And now since my crash thing it has lost some functionality like the rewind to beginning, markers button, bus view (switching faders to control busses) and several other things I'm sure. I just don't get it. I even did a uninstall / reinstall of my edited driver and it has the same outcome. There are several mackie control options listed. It's got to be something in my preferences not set right. I feel like I'm playing a guessing game with my settings and I can't solve the puzzle.
Is it possible to get a list of what should be checked off in my settings from someone who is not having any function issues?

The vs700.dll should be in Cakewalk/Shared Surfaces (together with about 15 other default dlls) ...

That's the problem...It's not there, Thats why i thing im not getting proper functionality from my console. How do i get these files back? Do they come from Sonar files or the VS700 drivers? I'm guessing if I can get this back I won't need to use stupid mackie mode.

I think they come with Sonar because even on an old machine that I only ever installed X3 but not the vs700 contains the dlls ...

Did you try to restore them from a backup and simply place them in the folder?

Re: VS-700C and win 10 2016/02/03 06:51:08 (permalink)
I contacted Cake support and they sent me this link. I loaded it up and ran this. I opened the shared surface folder and there are more controller options now including a HTML file labeled Sonar VS700, But still there is no .dll file like all of the other ones listed have with them. Could it be that i might need to reinstall the VS700 2.02 drivers again with the modification? ( just a reminder from another thread I posted in, When I originally did the windows 10 driver mod / install...everything worked great before the crash. I lost a lot of files and programs by doing a system reset. ) Im back on track now....just minus the darn .dll file for the vs700.

Control Surface Installers

The information in this article applies to:

  • SONAR Platinum
  • SONAR Professional
  • SONAR Artist

Since the latest SONAR installers do not install control surface plugins, we have created a separate installer for these. Follow the steps below if you are missing any control surface plugins.
  1. Close any Cakewalk software you have running
  2. Download the file, Cakewalk Control Surface plugins_1.0.0.1.zip
  3. Find the file in your Windows File Explorer, right-click it, and choose Extract All...
  4. Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" box is checked
  5. Click Extract

Re: VS-700C and win 10 2016/02/03 07:34:46 (permalink)
Control surface dll can be installed and registered using (for example) that installer:
https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013201/V-Studio-700-Control-Surface-Plug-in-version-1-2-update

Then get the latest dll (64bit) from there: https://github.com/Cakewalk/Cakewalk-Control-Surface-SDK/blob/master/Bin/x64/VS700.dll?raw=true and copy it to the folder (replace the old one installed). Close Sonar before coping!
That is direct list to the file in the official CakeWalk github location (just in case you worry from where it comes).

NOTE: You can avoid the first step if you know how to execute "regsvr32 VS700.dll" with admin rights from Windows command line... The installer (any version) will do this for you. No need to re-execute after the file is replaced.

EDIT: corrected the link to dll (was pointing to 32bit version)
