VST Scan Keeps Scanning .................
I'm having a problem with VST Scan in Sonar Platinum, which just started. I opened Sonar a couple nights ago (with no project loaded), and the VST Scan did it's usual scan (I have it set to "Automatic Background Scan" in preferences), which is normally pretty quick, but for some reason, it now seems to be scanning the same 20 or so plugins on every start up. I can see the names scroll by as it scans. I haven't installed any new plugins recently. Add to this, that it now repeats the same scan, multiple times back to back. I eventually had to change the settings to manual scan, to make it go away. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Are you on Jamaica? Not sure related but when I update to J, I'm getting VST scan issues. Namely, it just stalls at a Wave VST. When I roll back to Ipswich, no problems. Also getting some strange timing issues on some soft synths, which others have confirmed. Sorry, no solutions but I was just wondering what update you were on as I'm curious whether this is a part of the Jamaica update bugs I'm - and others re timing in particular - are experiencing.

I'm having VST Scan issues since updating to Jamaica Plain too. My VST Scan just keeps happening over and over while I'm working. Often I'll just open a plugin window, or press stop, or click play. Any random action can cause the VST Scan to start going.

There must have been some change in that area. Once I updated Jamaica, I started having issue with some Antares plugins. Part of AVOX4. The purchased pieces were fine but the unpurchased became discovered and kept announcing themselves. Fortunately for me I could just delete those pieces. But the point is the discovery routine definately changed with Jamaica.

Gonna rollback tonight to see if a few of my issues go away. Welcome to the rapid release update model sonar, its great for marketing but it has inherent issues as a model. Namely unavoidable bugs caused by hard limits on debugging time. Take a few months and harden the features you have rolled out this year. The updates for platinum have been incredible, more than enough. Now harden them and let us report the bugs and ....sloooow down.;)

Yes, I've installed and re-installed Jamaica 6 times now, testing and hoping it'll stop the 2 bugs I - and now others -am experience...VST scanning issues and playing timing issues with various soft synths. I don't have the time to keep installing and testing, so I've rolled back and will just wait for the next update...I won't be renewing my subscription next year though if this still keeps happening. Works now and thankfully a rollback gives me a good operating DAW. So yes, sloooow down. ;

Any update on this? Tried turning on Automatic Background Scan again last night, and same thing. Constant random VST scans while I'm working. Had to switch back to manual scan again.

Are you running as an administrator? The only time a "random" scan will start is if a plugin in your project or something external to SONAR modified a file in one of your VST scan paths. Any change to those folders will trigger a background scan of your vst paths, since that typically indicates that a new plugin was added. Now there are some old plugins that write to the program folder. This has been illegal to do at least since Windows Vista. User account control forbids this and will virtualize the file being written preventing the programs folder from being changed. Well behaved plugins should never do this. However if you are running legacy plugins and are in Admin mode then there is no way to prevent it other than removing those plugins or NOT running as an admin. This is not a problem with the auto scan mechanism itself. If for some reason you must as an administrator then there is not much you can do other than disabling the auto scan and manually scanning when you add stuff. Please try and find out which plugin is updating your scan folders by a process of elimination.

I'm still having the same issue. If we're trying to figure out if it's a problem with a specific plugin, can I ask if you're using Slate Digital's Mix/Master Bundle? Those are the only plugins I've added recently. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the subscription or maybe Gobbler.

I've got this happening too, and while I do run as administrator, and always have, it never happened before the JP update.

That is most likely coincidental. If the scanner is running without you doing anything but loading a project or changing plugin settings, its definitely due to the plugin writing to its folder. Please the folder of all the plugins being used in the project for newly updated files. That will lead you to the one doing the update. You should be able to verify this by not running as admin. If the random scans stop happening then its definitely caused by plugin writes to the folder.

Well the same thing is happening since I've updated to JP...not an issue in Ipswich though...another coincidence? It appears that there are quite a few VST scanning issues coming through related to the JP update, as I'm not doing anything different. My scan gets caught on a WAVE Bass Rider Mono VST - which includes the stereo version as well - and it doesn't get caught in Ipswich...that says to me JP issue.

Have just tried running NOT as an administrator, and the same thing happens. The setting in preferences is "automatic background scan". It's not a big deal or anything, doesn't cause any practical problems, but it is an oddity.

Hmm that is odd if its triggering a scan when you are not running SONAR as admin. That would imply something external is updating the scan folder. Can you try running this utility to detect which file is being updated in the folders when the scan runs?

I just checked, and yes, I am running Sonar as Administrator. I'm not even sure why, maybe some testing at one point. I'm going to try running without administrator, and see if that resolves the issue.

Is it any file or just dll/vst3 that triggers the scan (the FileSystemWatcher event can be set to be global or pattern matching)?

Hi Folks, I believe I have a reproducible case where the VST scanner is intermittently updating (every 5 minutes or so). Would any of you experiencing this issue be willing to send me a project so I can verify the behavior? I would just need the .cwp file without the audio so I can see what plugins are involved. If you can PM me with a link to the project that would be helpful. Thanks!
Thanks! Daniel Cate [Cakewalk]
