VST Scan Stopping midstream

This is not actually a new problem - it comes and goes with either X1 or Producer 8.5.3 While the progam is opening /scanning vsts, at some point it stops and I get the error message: "Cakewalk VST Scan Has Stopped Working....bla bla. If I drag this window out of the way, the scan window shows where it stalled - which is usually on the same .dll file each time this happens. I am wondering if this represents which dll file caused the stop, or is this a chance event??? By just clicking on the error - cancel the DAW will continue to load up okay,,but this is annoying.

Yes it is telling you what VST is causing the problem. You can then remove it from the scan path and then scanning will proceed as it should.  However It seems you have scanning on with each start. I would scan only when I have added another VST to my list. You can turn the scan on start off in the preferences.

Wow - ok this is the first time I have every known that you can turn off scan on start up....!!! Duh. So I sit and wait every time for the scan to finish when I could just open and go! - nice.

I thought you might like to hear about that. You can in 8.5.3 too.

As John eludes to, tho, you should look closer at that message and verify which plugin is causing the problem and remove it from your system.  you will eventually need to run the VST scanner again the next time you install a new plugin and when you do you'll hit this problem again when you scan manually unless you remove or repair the offending VST.

no, it doesn't need to scan unless you add a new one.  the reason it is set to default scan on start up is for people who won't remember to scan if they add a new one and to get them all scanned on first start up after installation.

Thanks - Sometimes it is amazing how long some of us can go without knowing some simple factor like this !!!! I too thought that the scan had to occur each time... Now its great to hit my X1 icon and have the program pop up right away!!!!! sweet.

My "offending" dll at this time is the span.dll which is associated with the Voxengo Span plug in. And yet if I recall the last time I checked, Span opened and was working - so maybe along the lines you are saying, Span already got scanned in okay a long time ago, and this recent "stop-scan" is due to some other issue. I will just get it out of there and see if that fixes the scan.

No kidding to that. Like a few weeks ago I just could not understand why in Guitar Rig 3 the tuner would not respond, plus it bugged me why I could not hear the amp sim until playback ----Duh for both problems; I just  had to click on "Input monitoring" ....I knew there was some reason for that button!!!
