VST Synths/MIDI not in sync with tempo?

I am using some simple VST soft synths (x64).  When I program or sequence tracks via piano roll or score view, I notice that when I play the file back, I get a slightly different performance each time (verified with DAW and sample accurate side-by-side).

Also, I notice that sometimes notes are rushed, dragged, or are delayed getting through the synth.  For example, if I have two sixteenth notes back to back, sometimes they play fine, sometimes they are rushed, and sometimes the notes just play on top of each other.

I am not experiencing any delays in the VST synth when I use a keyboard or through any other application.  It seems like Sonar X1 isn't doing any accurate sync-ing for MIDI to VST.  I never had this problem before with version 8 (and x86 synths)...but on the same system/hardware with X1, I am having this issue with all synths...from many manufacturers.  Some x86 some x64.

I can't seem to figure out how to lock the notes to time so that I get a consistent "performance" from X1 each time.  Playback through VST synths is wildly inaccurate from session to session and from tempo to tempo.

Does this sound totally insane or have I just forgotten to check a box somewhere?

Try increasing the value of Prepare Using buffer under Preferences > MIDI > Playback and Recording. Previous versions of SONAR defaulted to 500, which works well on most systems, but X1 seems to default to 250, which is too low for many. If it's lower than 500, start there, and increase in increments of 100 as necessary to get stability; you shouldn't have to go over 1000. The usual symptom is dropped notes, but what you're describing seem like it could be related, and I know of no other possible causes for that kind of widespread weirdness with soft synth timing.

+1 ... I have mine set to 750, which seems to be what my system requires to be most accurate.
