V-Studio 20 with Cakewalk software other than Guitar Tracks 4.0
I've had my V-studio 20 a while now .......and rate it highly..Love the physical controls and the fact that I can call up effects and tuning etc ..............via th V-studio .......Obviously it works a charm with the supplied Guitar Tracks 4.0 I've recently bought Cake walk Sonar Home Studio 7.0 and am having problems in getting the V-studio to act as the controller ,....., with all functions/ buttons working via the V-studio .and , if necessary also via the screen. At the moment I can get the whole thing to work by a)By telling each track in the song .to use the V-studio and input and output ......and also by telling the software to use the V-studio as input and output via the Options >......>> Audio Function . b) By using the software as the Controller .ie Arming tracks etc the V-Studio act as as an interface .......So my software recognises it .........................But the V-S-20 Controls dont work...... so it doess not regognise it fully ..some link appears missing ?????? What do I need to do so the V-studio 20 becomes the controller ( as it should be ) for transport / track arming and V-Studio Effects ??? also .........Is there any way of telling the HS7 software to use the V-Studio as the default input and output device ...and not have to do it track by track Any help appreciated ./......................love the kit ....................just want to use it fully Thanks in advance Stummer07

Hi there Barry First, make certain your VS-20 is connected to your PC using the USB lead before you open HS7. Now open HS7 and select Options>Controllers/Surfaces - if HS7 has 'found' your VS-20, it will appear in the list. If it isn't there, click on the Add New button (the yellow 'star' on the right of the screen) and select it. Now select it in both the In Port and Out Port fields. Next, run the Wave Profiler if you're in WDM mode; if you're using the ASIO drivers, first change your Audio Driver Mode to WDM (in Options>Audio>Advanced) and the Profiler should run automatically (I'd then recommend switching back to ASIO). Now, in Options>Audio>General check the VS-20 is listed as the Playback/Recording Device, and also that the drivers have been assigned on the Drivers options tab. If it isn't listed anywhere, selcet it from the drop-down list. To use the VS-20 as your audio interface, you must use the audio outputs on the unit itself, otherwise, if you want to monitor off another device, or your computer's audio outputs, you'll have to deselect the VS-20 when you're not recording. If this hasn't worked both to set the VS-20 as controller and soundcard, the only other thing I can think of Barry is that you might need to disable your PC's onboard soundcard to 'force' the use of the VS-20. To do this, you'll need to open your computer's Device Manager and expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers - you will see all the audio devices connceted to your PC (including the VS-20) listed. Assuming they're both/all enabled, right click on your PC's soundcard and select Disable (not Unintstall!) - then repeat for any other devices except the VS-20. Hopefully that should get you going mate. Steve

Super helpful advice and guidance Steve..Many thanks !! I wrestled with trying to get this set up most of the late afternoon and I think I've finally got there Had to use every tip and piece of advice though ...including disabling the sound card I think the 'breakthough'though was in going into the Controller/Surfaces setting and getting the actual Controller Surface to point to the VS20 ......before that it was orientated to a Joystick ??? Anyway it all seems to be working now from the V-Studio .....although .... Whilst all the V-Studio Controls all work ...............for some unknown reason the lights dont !! ( they work fine in GT4 !!) So when you go to 'arm ' a track ....it arms it in the DAW ......but the light doesn't light on the V-Studio ???? Weird But its a heck of a lot better than it was !! We are on the right track, and working in HS7 .......bit of a fiddle .....but all thanks to you !! Much appreciated .................I'm sure all this will be real helpful to Chucklebaby and if you get lights going as well C/baby ........do let me know how !!!

ah~!! I finally figured it out... I hope none of you spend 12hours just to figure this out... go to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7QY3uIdzUQ&feature=player_embedded and follow the steps. However, it's for the Sonar 8.5 setup. for X1 devise, go to Edit --> Preferences, then you will find same information shown on the video

So chuck, how's it working out for you? I'd be interested in it's abilities as a control surface only. Have you used the V-Studio 100? If so, do you have a preference? Got a birthday coming up, might have to hint at the wife. :)

A keyboard controller such as??? The 20 had the COSM in it. Would not ever use it I don't suspect. I already have a Boss GT-100 and a Line 6 PodX3

well thats why i mentioned you dont need it,if you have a guitar or bass sim,if you needed a soundcard id try and sell you this thing in a second but you dont. you need a controller by the sounds of things. this one:M audio oxgen 49 http://www.sweetwater.com...rf-X5LUCFYtU4AodfQMAPg see all those sliders/knobs...see the play button controls:PLAY/STOP/REW/FF/...loop mode/ this is a good controller for the buck, and saves you 150.00

the 10 sliders will control 10 tracks in sonar, the 8 knobs will control pan L/R on 8 tracks, and it has its own transport system. this makes hands on more than mouse clicking. i use this controller along with the vs 20 so i have 18 sliders/a slew of panning knobs and assign some of the vs20 knobs for Solo.Mute. and the m audios buttons for loop recording, exc. the best thing about the vs 20 is this.. it has two remote control inputs for foot switches. i use 2 fottswitches with this set up on the vs20. one foot pedal controls PLAY/STOP the other foot pedal controls REC/PLAY (punch in) so i usually ever have to take my hands off the guitar, because my foot pedal controls play/stop. and punching in by stepping on a pedal is amazingly easy bro. also has a input for a wha pedal.

I noticed that it has next and prev buttons for tracks. Does this mean that as I move down the tracks, that the sliders change to control the current 10 tracks? Are the sliders set in stone or are they dynamic? Does that make sense?

you mean on the vs 20? yes this is a very cool option here. this lets you slide the tracks down,so say your using tracks 1-8/simply press this button and it moves to tracks 9-16/and again to 17-24 this is a great feature. and like i said before im not sure if youve ever worked with a punch in pedal, but this was the main reason i purchased the vs 20.

no, I've never done any punching. I'm going to have to do some reading up on this unit. I like the looks so far.

check out this video, this is me explaining how to use looping and punch in inside sonar without any foot pedals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtKF7kWqh80 with the pedals its easy but with sonar you can program when sonar punches in,very cool.

redbarchetta This looking like a sexy little unit. I like the small compact size http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/nanoKON2bk that is pretty sweet, do you already have a keyboard? if you do them im sorry for suggesting the m audio oxygen.i thought you didnt have one. to me key's come in handy,im not huge on putting them in my music all the time, but i have a few tunes with synths and bass guitar sounds using the keys, piano, exc. i like that controller but if you ever want any keys, then you'll be boned.

Well, i don't have keyboard. Like you, not too big on keys. I'm an 80's rocker. I like guitars, bass and drums. But, I agree a keyboard would be nice to have. But again, a small one. Something along the same size as this little guy. I'm quickly running out of space. Oh yeah, and the bigger it is, the more my wife will probably have issue with my money spending... I can't hide the m-audio toy very well.

i hear ya man...lol just dont do what i did,i bought a small little keyboard with controls on it similiar to this one for 79.99 and then 3 months later i realized i wanted more,so i bought the m audio oxygen 49. its not big at all,it comes in a 49 key,61,key and a 72 size keys. but i hate pushing m audio product on people, they're always the last to update their drivers. thats why i would suggest taking 2 weeks to figure out what you want :) look around, and be positive, when i went to trade in my little akia(the one i spent 79.99 on) at guitar center to upgrade to this oxygen, they were only going to give me 14.99...lol i kept it and gave it to my friends son who is just starting out. i even had the original packaging, driver disk, manual everything, they're a tough crowd at that place. at any rate good luck, and choose wisely ...
