Vc64 channel strip
I was checking out the Vc64 channel strip on a voice over and tried the "Kiss FM radio" preset. I looked at the settings on everything but, could not for the life of me figure out what made the sound, sound the way it did. I mean the boomyness. The EQ appears to not have any gain on the low end. The compressor was dormant ( I hadn't adjusted the threshhold). What am I missing here? Does this plug just simply add a "character" when you insert it?

Hi Tim, did you look at BOTH EQ's and BOTH compressors? when you look at EQ2 on the KISS FM RADIO preset there's a huge gain of over 11dB @ 112Hz. that's where the "boominess" comes from. the compressor 2 has a fairly high ratio with a fairly fast attack and moderate release, too and I'm thinking those compressors are in parallel by default - they'd pretty much have to be - there's no switch to change them to anything else, but I don't know the exact signal routing of them. if you're not aware, the VC64 has 2 EQ's and 2 compressors which you have to switch back and forth with the E1/E2 and C1/C2 to see the settings on them both.

There is a small window in the left bottom corner of VC that shows the signal path of the preset as you step thru them. I don't know if you are aware you can change the signal path by clicking thru those paths.

I know you can change the path on the PX64 and the VX64 but I didn't think you could change it on the VC64. I'll have to check that out because I've never known the signal path on the VC64.

timidi Thanks Beag. I'll check it out. I didn't know that they were hidden. Yeah, they use the same GUI but you have to click the button to choose which one you're adjusting.

Oh, I see now. cool. I obviously never really checked this vst out before:) I can understand the parallel compression concept, but, parallel eq? um. live and learn I guess. I guess 'more is better'. Anyway, thanks.

Sorry! I had to leave for a while. You just click on the routing window to change the settings in VC64.

The VC64 is incredibly powerful, but this is not imediately conveyed by it's gui. There are 2 comps, 2 eqs and a number of routing options (accessed by clicking through them in the window, already discussed, on the bottom left). Also note that the comps, by default, display input rather than gain reduction. I always tend to flick them over to GR as soon as I start using it so I can see what I'm actually doing to the signal. This is another way of looking at the Vintage Channel: Which might give a slightly better sense of what's going on. Child

yeah, VC64 have a GUI that is not as intuitive as other plugs... sometimes the GUI is the one that defines that if you use a plug or not... however i have seen some free plugs that have cloned the LA2 look... but sound like crap go figure..
