Your right, your compose very good movie score! This is not a bad comment, I m saying it in a complimentary way. What defines that style, I think, is that lack of a lead instrument, be it guitar, keyboard or vocal. You have wonderful flowing sound-scape but there's no focal point.

Hmmm. Johnny, I appreciate your comment, but just in case anyone's choosing whether to listen to this track based on that.... There actually are multiple lead instruments (guitar and keyboards) and melodies on this track. When I think of a "soundscape," I think of something dreamy and nebulous.... This track is not that.

I can see this as a big showdown sequence in a movie. I like the interesting instrument selections, and the surprise flourishes here and there are top notch. Love the techno fade out. The mix is pretty awful, very flat and detracts from a pretty cool feel (no offense, just my opinion, but a fair one). And the bass is muddy and indistinct. But there is so much going for this that I am sure that I could do a friggin awesome mix in a day or so.

Hi Bruce, I like the composition. There are a lot of interesting things going on. It definitely sets a mood. I too think it fits into the film music genre and that certainly is not a bad thing. I think the mix sounds good overall. The drums sounded great and I liked the way you used the synths and strings. Oh, and the guitar work was really good. Nice work! Clark

I have to agree with James, it has lots of interesting stuff going on, but the mix is pretty flat. More dynamic action would be in following with the theme. There's not much brightness, especially in the guitar parts. These could really sing if you give them a little air. The guitarwork is good, but sounds confined in the mix. I definitely like some of the ideas you have going. If this were mine, I'd turn it over to James in a heartbeat, given that offer. This has unreleased potential to knock our socks off.

I enjoyed listening to this piece. I listened after I had read your blog and I found it interesting the way you created the drums. You have some cool musical ideas and they fit well together in this piece. Thanks for posting. sja

Just had a listen and at the risk of upsetting you, I'm hearing film music too - some kind of big good guy goes after the bad guy scene. Lots of interest, but I'm not hearing the bass much and it seems a little flat mix-wise to my ears . Not saying that I know the answers, just my observations as a listener. All that said, it's an interesting piece and I look forward to hearing some more of your work in future.

Thanks for all of the comments, everyone! I appreciate you taking the time to listen. It's interesting what different ears pick up! I think I can cure that "flatness" in the mix with a little EQ. To clarify, I certainly don't mind being categorized as soundtrack music - I just wish the movie producers would hear it that that way too! ; )

Hey, it only took me two years and a couple months, but I finally got around to making a new mix of this piece! It turns out that the good people of this forum were right... the mix was flat and murky. I've warmed it up greatly using strategic EQ as well as the console emulator. I also employed buss compression to tighten up the mix. Any comments on the new mix are greatly appreciated! https://soundcloud.com/ascent-music/vertical-bird-2013-bruce

This new mix sounds good to me. The song is dark and moody and certainly has a soundtrack quality. I liked the second song (Adaptation) even better.

Hey Bruce, Just the other day I was going through some old files and stumbled across the original Vertical Bird. I like where you went with it. This version has a lot more life to it. Nicely done.

The new mix is better. While I love what's going on with the song, I have to agree with the first comment. It lacks melody. I know you said it does but it's a string of riffs all put together. Mix wise, placing things across the field better will make this even better. Excellent work!!!

Robert, Robert and Mark, thanks so much for the positive reinforcement. It's always discouraging to go back to a mix I did a year prior and realize it sounds muddy and dead! This one was good oppportunity for experimenting with the mix, and will likely influence what I'm doing going forward. As for melody, I guess it's in the ear of the beholder! ; ) I'll agree that it's more of a repeated theme than a melody.
