Very Basic Questions

I am moving from an old version of Sonar used with an external hard disk recorder to a Roland V-Studio with Sonar X1.

1.  If I want to record an external MIDI keyboard, do I need two tracks in Sonar: one MIDI track to control the instrument and a second audio track to receive the audio input from the V-Studio interface?
2. Related to the above: I would like to be able to monitor the external instruments along with virtual instruments as I am arranging the track, and then record when ready.

I am new to this set-up and have not finished wiring and configuring.  The above questions may or may not also apply to some of the virtual instruments I have installed (e.g.. Vienna, Fab Four, Ivory II) and the built in Fantom, but I will definitely need to use some of my tried-and-true external MIDI rigs, especially for transferring songs written with the old kit.

Thanks very much,

Konrad

It works the same in X1 and any Sonar. It is Sonar.

You will do it as you did it before.

Thanks, John, but I never did this before.

In the past, I created MIDI tracks in Sonar and the audio output of the keyboards was routed to an external recorder.  The only audio ever record in Sonar was a RealGuitar plug-in.

To program and then record a MIDI keyboard in X1 (or any other version of Sonar), do I need an MIDI track to control the keyboard and a separate audio track to receive the input from that external keyboard?

    Thanks.

OK sorry.  Its so simple just make an audio track and route the audio output from the synth to the audio input of the V Studio and then into Sonar. When you want to record just hit the record button on the audio track to record enable it. Then record.
