Very New to Sonar

I have recently acquired Sonar X1 Le. I've looked at several videos on Youtube but nothing helps me. I want to record voice over karaoke backing tracks. Clean up the vocals. etc Is there anyone near SG7 North Hertfordshire UK that would give me some of their time to help me get going. I'm happy to pay.

How about somebody helping you over skype(or something)? I think more people would be able to help....

Or describing your problems more specific so that the whole community may assist you.

Good luck,

What are you using for an audio interface to record your vocals? Where are you getting your backing tracks from? Is it MIDI or audio?

The first thing I would ask, is what audio interface you are using? Is it updated to the latest version (ASIO drivers)? Can you play back audio in SONAR?
Best of luck.

Actually the first question we should be asking is can the OP play back any audio (iTunes, Youtube, etc.) through the interface.

Sonar can use the on board sound chip. It wont be ideal but it will work. In Sonar you will need to goto Preferences and setup you audio device for use by Sonar. This is a matter of checking boxes and setting the sample rate and bit depth. I would start with 44.1 kHz and 24 bits.  Once that is done its simple to record using Sonar.

In a new project with an audio track just click the record arm button on that track and make sure its input is your sound chip's mic input. (All this is in the manual.) Than click the record button on the transport. You should hear a click of the metronome and the Now Time indicator should be moving. Speak into the mic or play your instrument. You should see audio being recorded on that track. After that hit stop and un-arm the track. Play it back by clicking play.

Hi John. I think you may be the guy to talk to. My goal is to sing over karaoke tracks, clean up/fx the vocals and save as recordings. I would like to be able to play the music track via my headphones and record the vocals separately. Can I do that with Sonar.

If you are in the UK? Where?

Yes Rick, you can do that easily.

You might find it even easier if you were to invest in a dedicated audio interface and bypass the internal sound chip altogether, and you don't need to spend a fortune - £100 will get you something of suitable quality with solid ASIO drivers (a must!)

Absolutely!

Sonar is a multi track audio and MIDI workstation. Bristol has answered your question correctly. I also agree with his assessment. Also I would urge you to purchase Sonar Artist.

Sonar LE is very limited plus its based on a very old version.

What you should get is Sonar Artist and a good quality sound card.

Hi Rick,

I live on the Suffolk/Essex border but it happens that I'm dropping my wife off at Welwyn Garden City first thing in the morning (Wedn 1st July) and that's not too far away from you.  I could spend an hour with you if you like.

Send me a PM (personal message) with your details and we'll sort something out.

Just so you know, I can't compare with the really experienced guys like John and Bristol Jonesy, but I do use Sonar and have written some stuff.  At the very least I should be able to point you in the right direction.

This is a loaded question. Its too broad to answer. Let us know what you wish to do and we can give you a list. How many inputs. How many outputs? What sort of interface. USB, PCI or Firewire? How much do you want to spend?

OK Rick, I have your address and telephone number so I'll see you tomorrow.  We'll also have a chat about audio interfaces and I'll bring my own setup so you can see for yourself.  It will probably be between 9am and 10am

John/Jonesey,
Bearing in mine the lack of an audio interface, do you think ASIO4ALL is going to be the best bet?

Never! I totally abhor that thing! All it will do is add another layer on the base driver to make it appear as if it were an ASIO driver. The driver that is doing the communicating is still the Windows driver. Either MME or some version of WDM. Most likely MME.

sGodfrey visited me today and we spent a couple of hours getting into Sonar X1. We have decided that it would be beneficial for me to have the latest software but that I would also benefit from Melodyne which is standard with Sonar Pro. So I'm now going to get that on a monthly payment package. With all the toys.

Oh I know what an audio interface is now, considering that too.

Thanks for the help, I doubt this will b e the last you hear from me.

Rick I hope this is not the last time we hear from you. I'm happy you and another member were able to meet and have a hands on. That is a really good way to get started. Don't forget we are here 24 7 if you do have any questions.

You will want Sonar Platinum for all that it offers. But Sonar Pro is a good version too.

Its great hearing from as you a follow up. Thank you for taking the time to do that.
