Video capturing program for getting help here more easily

What software do you guys use when capturing screen vids?  I'd rather not spend a ton of cash, as I'm just simply looking to show my workflow and get some tips on what I'm doing poorly/wrong/general-dumbness-on-my-part.

If you have an NVidia card this might be an option, never used it myself (yet):

Camtasia Studio has a fully-functional 30-day trial, which makes nice videos that are efficiently sized. If you only plan to use short-term, this is the simplest for you.

As I have Premiere, I was looking for a way to capture the desktop to feed Premiere and picked up Koyote's "Screen to Video" this morning based on this post (best answer part). They recommended several options there (Camtasia links are in there as well).

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

I don't know if this will work or not, but I will attempt to paste a URL for search results for Screen Capture, refined with filters for Windows and Free:

    http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=screen+capture&platform=Windows&licenseType=Free&searchtype=downloads

Please note that while the Downloads.com web site certifies any software on their site is free of viruses, you MUST pay attention during the install process, because almost ALL software installs from there will have things like pre-checked boxes that will install all kinds of 'extra' software, like Google Toolbar, Coupon programs, and that sort of thing.  Just make sure you pay attention during the install, and you will be fine.

Hope one or more of the above will fit the bill for you.

All of my earlier videos were captured with this freebie, CamStudio.

More than capable for most needs. Only try the Camtasia trial if you are resistant to buying great software. It's great but at a price of course.

Another program that works is HyperCam.  The only thing I have not figured out yet (haven't tried to hard) is how to capture the audio of Sonar with the video as I don't think you can share the audio device with Sonar and HyperCam.  I think this problem extends to all of these video capture type programs.

I believe that the work around most people use it to run a cable out of their interface and back in again.  For myself, I could simply use my ASUS gaming audio card with the "what you hear" setting selected, but I don't think this would work on my MOTU, hence the audio cable.

Yep that's a good point Phonic. Audio capture from the DAW software at the same time as microphone capture can be a bit of a nightmare. I did get CamStudio working once but I'm not entirely sure how.

I use a mixer with a separate audio out nowadays but I also tend to do the voice capture and screens captures separately so it's not so much of an issue.

Ditto on Hypercam. For the audio aspect, I run two interfaces. Sonar works with the V-Studio using ASIO. I have an Octa-Capture running as WDM for Windows. The V-Studio audio out goes to the Octa-Capture audio in, which gets recorded in Hypercam.

This is how I did my Advanced Workshop videos. It was complicated enough to get Sonar, Vegas, Hypercam, and two interfaces working simultaneously that I had to write a mini-manual on how to do the setup.

Be wary of the format you are using... I am so new to video that I have no clue how I "should" set up screen captures. Camtasia was sort of a "no brainer" route, which was nice. I was messing with "Screen to Video" and made a 4GB file in 48 seconds!! Eesh... I could only think (that ain't working.... no way I will send that to anyone).

For the folks who do tutorials, what are the best video settings for 1) the screen capture (does screen resolution play into this as well)? and 2) the export?

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

I capture at my native screen resolution (1920 x 1080). I use Camtasia Studio and use their Techsmith 2 codec. I also nearly always capture full screen, highest quality setting, at a frame rate of 30fps.

Both my main studio DAW and laptop are fairly powerful though, laptop's the least spec'd - i7@ 2.2 Ghz with 12 GB RAM if that makes a difference.

Export depends on who I am exporting for. Most of the time it's as an avi at capture resolution, but I sometimes use WMV.

I also export separate video and audio files although any Sonar output tends to go into the main video, unless that's requested separately or sometimes not required. Voiceovers are generally kept separate.

Most of my work's post production is done elsewhere though so I'm not sure what formats are used after I've done my bit.

Camtasia is a great piece of software for screen captures if a little pricey just for the odd capture. There are some pretty good freebies out there as well, but all the ones I have tried fall well short of Camtasia for post capture editing ability.

Have you checked out Jing, made my techsmith, the same company that makes camtasia. I found it to be very good for basic stuff. Very easy to use. I liked the interface. You even get a free place to post videos.

I have used Jing on the recommendation of Dan Gonzalez to illustrate a bug .  It's pretty fool proof (even I used it), and, as fooman says, it gives you a place to upload the videos.
