Vietnam Veteran Day
Might seem weird coming from someone who's still merely a resident in this country and wasn't even 1 year old when the troops withdrew, but the stories of that war marked me, like they did many for years afterwards... Ever since we've moved to the US, I've developed a profound love for this country and an utmost respect for the people who served it. The cause of veterans has reached me in a way I couldn't have imagined just a few years ago. In the end, green card or no green card, home is where the heart is as they say. So, there... Greatest respect to all those who served.

And it takes a Canadian to mention a day that I didn't even know about! Although I feel the same way you do, except about WWII. I studied that war a lot when I was younger for some reason but know next-to-nothing about other wars - no idea why either! One (potentially narrow-minded) observation I've had lately is that recent immigrants and visitors seem to hold the U.S. in higher regard than many that were born here to long-time residents. *Sigh...*

I'd like to thank those who served in that era. They certainly weren't appreciated well enough upon their return home. That part was shameful. I was slightly young or I'd have been involved myself. I had a draft number in the 250-300 range. I can't remember exactly what it was now.

spacealf There's a annual National Day for that and it is a Holiday. I think it is called - Veteran's Day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_the_United_States That Holiday is November 11th.
There are particularities, but 11/11, or Remembrance Day, is observed throughout the Commonwealth. Vietnam Veteran Day was officially declared in recent years and is unique to the US.

Yes, thanks for the reminder. It's always good to celebrate the ones who came home..alive. Far too many of us have "that" flag. You know the one. I grew up in a military family. Like Old55, I narrowly missed the draft. I was 4F anyway, being the last surviving male member of our line, so I wouldn't have seen combat duty. But many of my friends did. They never really shook the ghosts. They just learned to live with them. Thanks to those of you that served.

I have an older cousin who served in that war. I remember being at my aunts house when they would show the days casualty count on the nightly news. When that part of the newscast came on, it got very quiet. For those of you too young to remember, they actually did that. Every night, it would be a few hundred to a thousand or so, and then the war total. The actual total was close to 60000 when the war was over. He made it home safe, and virtually unscathed. He'll tell stories now if asked. I look at 18 year olds now, and they seem like such children. Hard to believe what they are capable of. Randy
