Whoa.... I'm in. One of my absolute favorite drummers! He may not be Neal Peart, but he's got a style all his own, and he friggin beats the crap out of his kit! I'm sooo getting this! Thank you for posting this!

That math was pretty accurate for me too having seen Dio on the Last in Line tour. Short answer: buy it.

Okay Bapu, If you got the fluid cash, buy the damn thing. Appice was a legend. Still feeling my shirt flutter as he pounded away with Vanilla. Hey, but on second Alzhiemer's thought, was mixing up Carmine with his younger brother Vinnie... Never mind...probably a cool drum set anyway... John

The demos sound really good but I wish they'd give more info about the kit and how it was recorded. I bought the Neil Pert kits and was really disappointed to find there were no direct mic channels for the cymbals. It's little things like that that make a big difference. Steve

These have direct mics and have volume more in line with other packs.

Hi Steve - I have the Neil Peart kit up right now, and I see all cymbals on their own channel in BFD 3. Am I missing something?

They are in their own channel but when you hit a cymbal are you seeing any signal register in the direct channels? If you take out all the ambient mics you should discover that the cymbals become mute, that's because there are no direct mic channels. If you have direct channels then something is wrong with either mine or your version. Steve

Definitely no direct in the Peart and Epik Drums. Part of the story is that Ken Scott engineered this the way he did did back In the 70s to get the sound he was looking for.

But to be clear the Vinny Appice kit has direct mics on the cymbals.

OK I just played around with this with the Peart kit and I find it odd. It words as you described - only in the ambients. But, you can replace a cymbal with something else and it still plays - does that make it direct? This is the first time I've run into this so it's new to me.

smallstonefan But, you can replace a cymbal with something else and it still plays - does that make it direct? Not sure what you mean by the above, by "something else" I'm guessing you mean another cymbal/kit piece? If that's the case then that just means the other cymbal/kit piece was recorded with direct channels too. And what do you mean by, "it still plays"? What still plays? Steve

I just meant swapping out a cymbal for a different cymbal in my library. That still plays a sound with a groove. I'm confused, because I would assume the swap out would then create a direct channel and not use the ambient mics. I'm thinking I don't understand something about this routing...

My assumption is cymbals can have both direct and over head channels recorded, when you swap a cymbal both will be available if they exist through the appropriate channels.
If you turn off the overhead and ambient channels and use the direct channels you will find your replacement cymbal sounds but the other do not as there are no direct channel recordings.

BFD3 will always by default load a direct channel for any kit piece whether direct mics were used in the recording or not (even for a triangle). All the BFD3 cymbals and expansion kit cymbals I own have direct mic channels apart from the Neil Peart ones. Some of the BFD3 cymbals have, Direct, Overhead, Room, Amb3 as well as 3 mono channels.
