Virus Protection??
Hey, anyone know a good virus /anti-spyware protection that actually works? My computer just got infected with the Trojan.vundo virus among others, and my current software did nothing! In fact, the virus actually DELETED my anti-spyware! Does anyone have any good tips or ideas to help??

I use AVG. It leaves a small foot print and doesn't hog resources. I don't even turn it off while recording and have no problems. There is a free version that alot of people use but I use the full version because it has antispyware included. For me it's worth the $60 per year for piece of mind. I believe that AVG also offers a free spyware too so if you go the free rout download both. AVG LINK Mike

I've heard people complain about Norton AV, but I've been using it for more than a decade with no problems whatsoever. I also see no need to turn it off to record. For spyware I use Spybot and Lavasoft AND Windows Defender. Each one seems to be able to detect things that the other two miss. M

+1 for AVG as well. I leave it on all the time when recording and never had an issue. It also uses very little system resources when running in the background. I would also do a goggle search on that virus type and see what the reccomended fix is. Some of those types can be nasty and render your anti-virus useless upon installation.

+1 on AVG here to. AVG also has free antispyware, anti malware and antirootkit so you can get almost all components free. No problems whatsoever so far.
Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

another vote for AVG. if you want certainty though, make another account on your computer and make sure it is a regular user (not an administrator). use that account for all internet-related activity. use the "shared documents" folder to move stuff between users. since pretty much every piece of spyware depends on having administrator rights, your virus problem is solved. some other things you can do to help yourself out: use firefox with adblock plus, filterset.g and noscript use gmail/yahoo for your email account, never windows mail or outlook express stay away from porn, warez and myspace stay away from kazaa/limewire for your current situation, i hate to tell you that it's probably game over with vundo. i've removed a variant of it before and it took me about 4 hours, and i do this sort of thing for a living. if you've got backups of your data and you haven't installed more than a few programs, it'd probably be quicker and definitely a lot easier to reformat and start over. the nastiest virus i ever worked with infested itself so well that even in safe mode with command prompt, the command prompt (cmd.exe) was infected. i worked on it with one of the big-shot AV vendors but their instructions still didn't work because any executable you ran got infected. so i finally made a CD, booted into safe mode and ran ProcessExplorer from SysInternals from the CD so it couldn't be infected (this virus actually infected a read-only USB drive, don't ask me how). using the uninfected ProcessExplorer i killed the original cmd.exe and then all the extra spawned infected processes that launched when any infected EXE was closed. once ProcessExplorer was the only program running i launched the AV vendor's cleaning utility from the CD using ProcessExplorer's run command. by the time i could get to an infected computer, most of the EXEs on it would be infected that weren't system files. the point of that is to say when it comes to viruses and spyware, prevention is really the only option.

After trying many and getting badly infected whilst using CA, I found the only one that found every bit of code (I got a couple of really nasty trojans etc) on my machine was Kaspersky. Been using this about two years now and never another problem. Just download and off you go. Of course the best thing is, if at all possible, not to have your music computer connected to the internet - but as we all know, not always possible Nigel

Thanks guys for pointing me in the direction of AVG; my Norton was on the point of expiring. Anyone got any tips on how to remove the remnants from my machine? It doesn't seem to want to go! Thanks, gareth

If you use the free AVG I would also suggest to get something like SpywareBlaster and/or Spybot.

ORIGINAL: Gareth Thanks guys for pointing me in the direction of AVG; my Norton was on the point of expiring. Anyone got any tips on how to remove the remnants from my machine? It doesn't seem to want to go! Thanks, gareth you are pretty much screwed with vundo unless you can find someone who knows what they are doing. basically, there will be registry entries, running processes and files (probably in the windows directory or one of its subdirectories). you can't get rid of the registry entries because the running process will kill them. you can't get rid of the files (even if you can find out which ones they are) because the running processes will have them locked. so the first order of business is stopping the processes, although there's usually another process that kicks the original back on when it gets killed. if you can identify which files are being locked, you can use "hijackthis!" (google for it) to delete them one at a time. (hijackthis may also identify some of the files you need to delete - they'll be listed in the registry entries and have official sounding names.) pick the exes first and make sure they stay gone after boot, and boot into safe mode command prompt every time. you should be able to run hijackthis from the command prompt. or you can just give up and reformat, it will be a lot easier.

NOD32 is the best. Have it over a year and not a problem. One was out of date for 6 months and it still killed a load of viruses. Won the best antivirus award 2006 i think. It cost 40euro over here per year.

I have Bitdefender on my desktop but I'm currently in the market for virus software on my laptop that I just got. The free Norton just expired. I was gonna go with Bitdefender on the laptop too but this other dude is pointing me to AVAST. How does AVG compare with Bitdefender or AVAST?

Jack is wise and you would do well to heed his advice. Backup, reformat, and reinstall. Also, consider his recommendations for the future: use firefox with adblock plus, filterset.g and noscript use gmail/yahoo for your email account, never windows mail or outlook express stay away from porn, warez and myspace stay away from kazaa/limewire Your computer will almost never be the same after a good virus infection. Reinstallation is the only way to get it back to proper performance. AV companies are struggling to keep up with all of the malware out there. It is becoming increasingly tough to fight them off. As always, the best line of defense is to practice skeptical computing. Also check out Avast for lightweight anti-virus. Both AVG and Avast are good, but free. They are somewhat limited. CJ is right about NOD32. It's pretty good. Also check out Kaspersky.

One other thing. Sometimes your ISP will offer an anti-virus program for free. It will often be McAffee, or something else less desirable, but it is worth looking into it. I know Comcast offers McAfee for free to their subscribers.

I went with AVAST. It seems pretty tight so far. And it's not causing any problems with my DAW.
