Vive la République!

Democracy in the UK is a sham.

Why are our so-called 'Royal' family exempt from suffrage?

Why does our House of Lords perpetuate the feudal idea of 'hereditary' peers?

Why is the anachronism of Church of England bishops sitting in the Upper House allowed to persist?

I'm open to some form of modifying institution to overlook the business of the House of Commons (maybe including 'life' peers as is the case currently), but in 21st century Britain, I believe the concept of eligibility to the corridors of power based upon one's birth or religion is an insult.

And yes, I know that as a constitutional monarchy, the House of Windsor wields no 'real' power, but as Russia's justified complaints over the recent comments by Charles prove, they are seen by others to be in a position of such.

Rant over.

    I hear you...

Likewise, it's quite disturbing to see this sycophant's apparent dream of regressing Canadians to their state of loyal subjects of her majesty.

I'd be willing to trade some of your insults in the corridors of power for ours.

I see Her Maj' has given William, Kate and George a little place to live...

I do hope it will be feckin' big enough for the three of them

Mind you, nice to see over a million pounds of our money has been used to renovate it.

Best of all, this is just a 'weekend' retreat for them to escape to from the stress and discomfort of slumming it in Kensington Palace.

    It's obscene.

And people wonder why I begrudge every stinking penny of whatever it costs me to keep this inbred bunch of dysfunctional scroungers in the lap of luxury.

I don't remember voting for that.

Write a song about it. Some examples:

I'm loathe to post on this thread, for fear of being branded 'a Royalist'. Which I'm not.

Seems to me though, that a powerless institution might as well be suffrage free.

As far as the cost of the monarchy goes, things have changed since 2012 with the introduction of 'the Sovereign Grant', it's worth checking out.

On somewhat of a different note, the school I attended to back home was called Royal College (British system) and we were known as "Royalists" (not in the same sense as above though).

    Royalist!!!

I like, admire and have much respect for The Queen. There was a picture of her on the wall in my first classroom at primary school, that's one of my earliest memories..she's been The Queen all my life.

This provides continuity, and reinforces part of what I feel makes me English. The England I grew up in is disappearing rapidly in a cultural sense, so I tend to cling onto touchstones like Her Maj.

When she 'appoints' a Prime Minister for example, to me, that's The State made flesh..she is 'us'.

The rest of them...... but all in all, they seem to do a reasonable job of 'being The Royal Family'

Well, she just wanted to make sure she lived long enough so that Charles wouldn't become the next Queen.
