Vocal Layers
Having a little trouble with this. Here's what I want to do: Keep recording vocal takes in layers on the same track. I only want to hear the one I am currently recording: it's confusing to hear all the others. Problem: When I set preferences to Recording Mode = Overwrite and Store Takes in a Single Track, recording erases the previous layers. When I change to Sound on Sound, I hear the current and previous tracks, which is a mess. I lost several great takes tonight messing with this. What's the deal? CLARIFICATION: I don't want to work in Loop mode: I want to sing the song, stop get a drink, and then run it again. I researched some previous threads and did not get a complete answer, but Loop seems to make a difference from what I read.

Could be misunderstanding you, but each layer has an independent mute button, displayed to the right of the track info in the track view, when you have layer view expanded. If all you want is to mute previous takes before beginning another, that's what you use.

Hmm... in layer mode, just mute what you dont want to hear before you do another take. I cannot remember if there is a setting that auto mutes clips after takes. Lance

Thanks, but I record one layer, mute it, then the whole track is muted so I can't hear what I am now recording. I understand what you are saying about Mute for each layer, but with only one layer recorded, I just see the normal track mute button. (I have Show Layers on.) Tonight I had to work around this by cloning the vocal track over and over to do multiple takes. What's really frustrating is that this worked several hours ago when I first started recording and I cannot figure out what has changed. There aren't that many options in Preferences.

You can turn on the auto-punch-->mute previous takes setting. Then just set up a punch range and have at it. It's under Preferences --> Project --> Record

konradh I understand what you are saying about Mute for each layer, but with only one layer recorded, I just see the normal track mute button. (I have Show Layers on.) . Right click on the on the area between the track properties pane and the clips pane (where the dB scale is displayed) and select "insert layer". You should get a new empty layer and you'll now be able to see the individual layer mute and solo buttons.

I just use the track Mute button, but I'm monitoring via a mixer. I guess you're input monitoring? If so I doubt that will work for you but the "mute previous takes" should work while loop recording. The layer mutes should work if you are stop/start recording.

Thanks guys. I will try out your suggestions. I am not a great singer but have some parts on a project. I am doing my vocals first before the lead singer comes in so I will have all the X1 and V-Studio things figured out. I have done a lot of tracking but have not done vocals in X1 until now. Last night I was using a Rode NT2-A into a Presonus Eureka preamp/channel strip and then into the V-Studio 700 interface. I was very happy with the sound using light EQ and mild compression in the Presonus on the way in. I set-up a reverb bus to monitor a little Lexicon in the headphones which were plugged into the V-Studio console. Everything but the layers worked fine.

Can anyone shed any more light on this? I have "store takes in a single track" and "create layers on overlap" enabled in preferences. I have tried both overwrite and sound on sound modes. I still cannot get this to work. 1-Right-clicked everywhere and do not see an Insert Layer option. The Layers menu has Show Layers, Rebuild Layers, and Remove Empty Layers. 2-I only see one Mute button: the one for the whole track that mutes all layers. What am I missing? And, yes, I have the X1 Power Book and have checked pp 72 and 122ff. Don't see anything that helps. Thanks!

I just select the first take and hit 'K' to mute it, after that I use the layer mute buttons. You would think there would be an option to automatically mute previous takes when using layers without having to set up a punch-in loop, it's been brought up enough times. To insert a layer make sure you have Layers enabled on the track then right click on dB scale at the edge of the track header and the option is there along with Rebuild etc. Dan
