Vocal To Choir !
Greetings I have a song with Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass Vocals. Was going to record the vocals myself (albeit in the wrong octave) and was wondering whats the the best way to Choir-ise it. The obvious way is to record multiple takes of each part (assuming my voice can last out) but was wondering what process I could use to simulate 20+ of me singing rather than one for each part Thanks for any advice/hints/tips/scorn/derison !

There are lots ways to do process a clone of your original track. The more clones, the merrier. You can also try cloning the processed tracks to take the processing further. 1. Check out the article about ADT (automatic double-tracking) using Melodyne Essential I just posted in the Cakewalk blog. 2. I did a lengthy series of posts about how to do varispeed effects with Sonar's Loop Construction window but NOT using it to create Groove Clips. You can use varispeed to change the formant by speeding up or slowing down, then do ctrl-click+drag on the clip edge to restore the clip to the desired length. (BTW ignore the guy saying it doesn't work, he apparently thought the technique involved making Groove Clips.) 3. If you still have V-Vocal installed, change the voice formant and timings somewhat. 4. Combine all of the above.

Multiple options, but if you have Melodyne, one is to make copies of the track, and use Melodyne to edit the attack and formant. Their website has a good video on this.

There's always Multiple instances of Antares Harmony Engine or Vielklang Instant Harmony... Or Anatares Choir plugin...or multiple instances of Choir... Or, of course, as stated, the Mutliple tracks of each vocal with "minor" tweaking to get the "not the same voice" effect...

After you've spent hours with Melodyne only to finally realize that the effect isn't what you were after after all, go back to your first intuition and double/triple/quad track every part. That's the way it's done when it's done right.

Agree with bit flipper. For me it's far quicker to do multiple tracks than to edit single tracks or play with effects, and each take has more clearly different voicing as well. I like to use different mic's for each take too, gives different color to the voice on each track.

when you're singing doubles with yourself, trying changing the timbre of your voice so as not to sound like yourself singing multiple parts. Choir characters. I do choir parts alot. Sometimes for fun I layer quantum leap symph choir ( each sec separate, same parts and singing the words) with my voice.

Interesting, I recently bought Requiem Light and was wondering if it would be worth the effort to try just that...I reckon I will now...thanks!

I've had some success overlaying a generic choir patch with my own vocals. Works great for oohs and aahs, but if mixed a few dB under it even adds thickness to articulated words as well. For the female parts I either enlist the aid of an actual female if one is handy, or fake it with Melodyne. I once used the free RoVee pitch-shifter plugin to fake a female part and was surprised at how well it worked. You can hear it on my song "Innocent Lies" (click the link in my sig), in the second verse starting at 1:36. It's not a prominent part but in context I think it's pretty convincing.

I have discussed ADT here a few times and I am looking forward to reading Craig's take on it.

That's pretty convincing Dave...when you do this, do you sing it in a high falsetto (say a third below the pitch you want) and then bump it up a third? Thanks, Randy

Another cool trick: When layering yourself in multiple takes, keep the mic in the same position of the room. Each layer you record, stand in a different spot. thus giving the effect of one mic pointed at a real group of people who are spread out.

I used to use a product called Clone Ensemble way back in the old days. I'm not sure it will still work but you could always give it a try. ( www.cloneensemble.com)

Sing the tracks a few times, then use Clone Ensemble (very lightly)!

Just had a quick look and it appears promising although as its a 32 bit program I'm going to need a bitbridge to use it on a 64 bit OS (Sigh....... Something else to learn !)
