Vocal microphone < $300?

Hi. I'm fishing for recommendations for a vocal microphone that adds a little warmth. Unfortunately, the local Sam Ash has a very limited selection to demo. TIA!

I'd recommend an EV re-20 for that price range. I like dynamic mics for vocals. The Re-20 is very consistant, sensative, and is a workhorse for a lot of other instruments as well.

Thanks for the info bso. I will try to locate one of those. I am also considering a Rhode NTK if I can find one used.

You can't miss with a Studio Projects C1 for $199. It's the best value out there IMHO.

Actually, I was researching the C3. Does it have the same guts as a C1, except for the additional pickup patterns?

What ! The C1 is the about the brightest mic you can buy at any price, that's a far cry from "adds a little warmth". Even the $99 B1 would be better then the C1.

Marshall V67G is my favorite of the cheap LD condensers I've tried, and it definitly qualifies as a "warming" mic, with very full lower mids. MAJOR proximity effect.

    Cheers.

The Marshall MXL9000 tube mic is exceptional for about $199.00

Hard to beat that price for the warmth of a real tube, we've got a couple and they tend to take the "sharpness" off of the sound that you will get with the NTK, which has found itself in the cabinet more oft that not since we tried out the Marshall.

I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

    I second that.

Awesome info, thank you very much everyone. That graph is great!

I am going to look up all of the mics and then see what's available for demo.

Nice graph, I wonder where the "Rode" mics fall on it.

    Wow, check out www.thelisteningsessions.com

It's where the graph that was posted came from. There are mp3 demos on the site.

There are links at the bottom of the "sessions" page to other sites with mic demos.
Sadly for me, much of the demo work is done by recording acoustic guitar. I would rather hear them moreso on vocals. The German website IIRC evan had bad vocals. Still there is a chance here to check some stuff out. It's an hour drive for me to get anywhere to tast them live.

I have a Studio Projects C1 and I like it quite a bit, but it is very bright.

Thank you for the advice. After some more advice from a local brick-and-mortar studio manager, I am going to look for a used Shure SM7. It is not warm, but it is definitely versatile. After thinking long and hard, I decided that my current cache of microphones was not yet diverse enough to begin looking for a microphone with specific characteristics. He gives the SM7 very high marks for rock applications - vocals, snare, and cabinet micing.
