Vocal recording query

Hi people,

I'm using Sonar 8.5

I'm wondering how people deal with tracks when recording multiple takes of audio? I know the sound on sound mode exists, but often I want to stop the transport to give the singer a rest before going into another take of a verse or part of a verse.

The only solution I've found is to set up a track template, and end up with 20 to 30 different tracks for all the different takes.

Is there a neater, more manageable method that I'm missing somewhere?

Thanks

Daniel

I'm not familiar with 8.5, having platinum. I have a similar issue with playing a trombone, and I use a combination of take lanes, and punch in recording to accomplish that. I try to get 3 or 4 take lanes of the full piece, and then if parts aren't all good, I punch in those areas, using take lanes for those punches.

    8.5 or Platinum:
I create 10, 20 or 30 tracks and record the takes one after the other in different tracks.
Finally I search for the best takes and put them in a new single track.
For me, this method is the easiest.
Sometimes I use the not so good takes for background choir.

I use Layers.  To start off, I'll do an Insert Layer, and hit its Solo button.  Then I hit R to record, and it will record on a new layer.  When I hit R again, it will record to another new layer (and I won't hear the previous takes, because of that solo I did originally).

When I'm done, I have a bunch of layered takes, which I can then comp together.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I have these options set:  in Transport->Record Options, under "Recording Mode" I use "Sound on Sound (Blend)". And under "Layers" I use "Create New Layer on Overlap".

Both useful answers with things for me to try on our next session....thanks!

I currently do what THambrecht does, but trying to find a neater way!

I use Platinum which uses Take Lanes instead of Layers. There has been negative commentary on Lanes vs the older Layers by people who got used to the idiosyncrasies of Layers but the new concept has been good to me. I record on the same track using comping mode and very easily comp together a final take. This used to take me much longer with pre-X series Sonar and I looked at (e.g.) Logic with envy.

I am having problems editing the takes together, as in Track view audio waveform editing seems rather tricky, and a bit hit and miss

That's exactly why the new comping mode in X3 and onwards is so awesome. Check a YouTube vid, it may be worth upgrading if you need this a lot.
