Voice Over - With Original Music by Mooch ... not like Bapus all cover songs

Kevin doesnt want to drive all the way to Zion, Il from Chicago to my Studio. My lap top cant handle sonar when I travel weekely to where he is in oak lawn, so I record him on my Ipad in garage band with an MXL v 67 Mic We record 7 voice overs ... The first three are distorted -- But the wave forms on the ipad were not distorted - I couldn't hear the mic through the head set as we were recorded - a flaw in garage band on ipad - you can only hear when playing back tracks but not WHAT you are recording and the wave forms didnt look distorted So hopefully tomorrow we will re record them at a lower level - They are just barley almost not distorting now The last 4 are fine - but could be mixed better I think Just finished putting original music to the voice overs from precvoius songs I never really finished - MIXED IT IN SOANRX1
So tell me what I need to improve on - I know one thing is matching the volume on each Voice over - What else?

I'll preface this by saying, I am not an expert...but I have recorded and mixed several VO's recently.
Thoughts as it played - unless there is a specific situation calling for it, I wouldn't add reverb. The first VO sounded like it was in the garage and a bit distracting.
-You already mentioned the volume matching and distortion thing, but I would also try and automate the volume to level out the 'performance' as much as you can, while also minimizing the spitty sounds 'esses' lip smacks (I didnt notice lip smacks in any of these).
-Sometimes the music can be really busy and distracting, but if you are stuck with the music, then maybe more EQ'ing and lower in the mix is the way to go.
-I don't think that mic works well with his voice...or maybe a combo of the mic/voice and room...it reminds me of a cheap USB microphone going in to a boom box. Is a reflection filter available? If you are stuck with the recordings "as is" then maybe some EQ can help. I would have a redo, with a nice mic in a vocal booth/reflection filter or a decently quiet room, if he wants to be a serious venture.

Actually the first one sounds the best to me. It mostly needs to have the sibilance reigned in. There is some slightly noticeable distortion but I think that could get brought under control as well. The rest are muffled and distorted. I would avoid whatever you did with those. It takes away from the guy's voice.
Do you not have a small mixer or something to attenuate the input level?
Also, needs some side chain action going on to get the music levels up when he isn't speaking.
Just what I'm hearing.

The Voice over man is coming to zion. I talked him into driving to zion and trying out my different mics and using my pre amps rather than using the ipad ...so we re do it next week
Hopefully this is ok with lpmike ...God forbid I post a better version

Ya, that makes more sense. However if you stuck in a situation like this again bring a couple (clean) socks with you to put over the mic. I'm too cheap to buy proper windsocks and popscreens so that's what I do to keep down sibilance and plosives. Try one sock at first and if it's not enough toss the other one on. I've also been trying to use two mics at once. One with a sock right up in my face and another one a few inches further away with no sock. That way if I get a really bad plosive I can edit it out and use the second mic track to cover make up for it.

Just from a mastering standpoint, the first VO sounds louder than the rest. I'd agree that there's probably too much reverb on it, too. Other than that, the music works and it's well recorded. Good job, Mooch.

Well shoot.. I am not clever enough to comment and not knowledgeable enough in VO to make an intelligent comment... but I can see no reason for any of the rude comments in a post asking for input. I thought/think it sounds pretty good. The guy has a good voice, it could use a little more of that early FM radio deep vibe.
