Voice ducking with FX Comp/Gate

I'm having a bit o' trouble doing voice-overs with my DAW.
I'm used to doing the hardware compressor side-chain thing, but I'm trying
to do this strictly with software...and for the life of me I can't figure
what I'm doing wrong.

Procedure originally posted by Rob 11/20/02:

1.) Pan vocal track to the left.
2.) Pan music track to the right.
3.) Edit bounce to tracks-stereo.
4.) Apply Cakewalk FX Comp/Gate with the following sidechain settings:

1... Output gain 0
2... Compressor between 1.5:1 and 3:1
3... Attack time 1
4... Release time 800
5... Gate Thr -78db
6... Compressor Thr -25
7... Detection Algorithm= Average
8... Stereo Interaction = Side Chain.

5.) Edit bounce to track mono...

and all is should be well, BUT when I engage the side chain mode, the vocal
drops out completely.
Any ideas what I'm doing incorectly?

TIA

I just tried it. It worked properly for one pair of tracks but not for another pair. I'm not sure why. It might be an anomoly with the plug. It might be worth dragging the two clips to new tracks and trying again.
