Volume Automation, Lowering Whole Envelope

Hi, this a novice question I'm sure, but I can't seem to find the answer.

If I've drawn automation on a clip, where the whole thing is 0db and then there is a 3db dip, how can I lower the whole envelope so that it is now at -3db with a 6db dip?  Seems like it should be simple...

Thanks!

There is no quick/fast way to lower the whole automation drawn but Sonar does have the "offset" mode which provides the same results. How to use:

Press key "O" - observe how every parameter shown in Sonar has now displayed a "+" sign. This indicates you are now in offset mode. Choose the desired parameter (in your case volume I presume) and lower to -3. Essentially what this does is "adding" (so to speak) a -3 offset to your initial automation. Press "o" key again to leave from offset mode.

The big disadvantage of this feature is that once you leave offset mode, there is no indication of the edits you have done in it, so its easy to forget what exactly you have done in a busy project - personally I would prefer a way to "select" the whole automation drawn and then drag with mouse and decrease - increase its amplitude (so to speak)

Position your cursor near the bottom of the clip and then double-click to select all the nodes inside that clip. Now click and drag one of the selected nodes to move the clip envelope.

Yes, it works in 8.5.3 as well, except the way I do it is by selecting the whole track, including envelopes. All the nodes should turn white.

Grab hold of any one of them and drag up/down.

If you're lowering the entire env, it pays to make sure you grab hold of the HIGHEST part of the existing curve before dragging.

I'm sorry... I don't remember off the top of my head. I've been focusing on X1 a lot lately. And I'm not in front of SONAR at the moment...

If you're trying it in 8.5 and it's not working, then it's probably new in X1. They really did enhance automation editing in this new version quite a bit.

Ok I'll check and let you guys know, actually I might have tried in an older version, falsely assumed it would never be working and never checked again!

Thanks for the tip!

to OP: you might wanna try Garrigus' suggestion first! LOL

Best, most succinct description of how to use Offset Mode I have ever seen. Bravo, Geek!

Garrigus' suggestion works perfectly, thank you!

The offset mode help was useful too! :)

I don't know about X1, but in 8.5 when you select the envelope- if you hold down the "shift" key while you drag- it will maintain it's vertical position (not slip left or right). It also helps to select the envelope tool (E) so you more easily avoid changing other things while you drag.

This is how I've been handling this type of scenerio since I discovered offset mode. Why move dozens of automation handles when it really is this easy.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

You don't have to move or select all nodes individually with the smart tool. Placed it at the top section in the track and there is a hot spot that lets one move the entire envelope. No selection is needed. This is the quickest way. If you try this you will also see why the edit filter is so important. This could never be done in 8.XX.

The Advanced Workshop video From Anderton explains this very nicely. All X1 one users should get this video.

The more I work with envelopes in X1 the more I like it. The only complaint I have is that there is no tool tip on mouse over indicating the envelope type when the data is ghosted. If it had that it will IMHO be just about perfect.

I fully agree FBB. I like it a lot as it is but that info would be helpful. Heck I didn't know about the hot spot above until I saw the Anderton vid. Tool tips are a strength of Sonar and its funny that in X1 C they are missing in some areas. I have used some programs that will obscure the screen with tips. Sonar never did that. I like the way CW has theirs when they are there.

In the past I would simply use my MC and rerecord new automation. The Smart tool makes editing envelopes too darn easy now. BTW the way CW has the Edit Filter set up is brilliant if one takes into account the hot spot.  Otherwise how could that hot spot know which envelope to adjust? It all just fits together. Those complaining about it simply don't understand it.

Also that tip is one of many from the Anderton vid. Well worth the price for all X1 users.

Best
John
