Volume issue - going from WAV to mp3

It seems that overall volume level goes down when I convert WAV files to mp3 - is this common or just me. I seem to have plenty of output and room to pull up the volume as desired on a player with the CD; but to get a similar volume level of the same songs on my mp3 player, I have to hike the volume level much further up to get the same .

Thanks

when it is set up correctly, the volume between a mp3 file and a wav should be identical.

Does your mp3 player support wave files? If so, load up the original wav and compare the two side by side on the same playback device.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

You could also compare the waveforms in Audition or other editor program to confirm that there is in fact a difference.  As bit said, there should be none.

In my experience, there should be no difference in the volume, and with 320kbs it should sound identical as well
