How does this differ from the Cakewalk Analyst plugin?

    It's analog spectrum, span isn't.
Use either one, they're both freebies.

Bit, I have found the cakewalk analyst plugin unreliable.   I'll put a LPF at 45 down to nothing at 20hz and it still shows full activity from 20 down to even 40 hz.... I was like what the hell????

ADK Built DAW, W7, Sonar Platinum, Studio One Pro,Yamaha HS8's & HS8S  Presonus Studio/Live 24.4.2, A few decent mic pre's,  lots of mics, 57's,58 betas, Sm7b, LD Condensors, Small condensors, Senn 421's,  DI's,  Sans Amp, A few guitar amps etc. Guitars : Gib. LP, Epi. Lp, Dillion Tele, Ibanez beater, Ibanez Ergodyne 4 String bass, Mapex Mars series 6 pc. studio kit, cymbals and other sh*t.

I have to admit that I've rarely used the Analyst plugin. I haven't much use for third-octave analyzers, which are really only useful in a live setting when matched with a 3rd-octave graphic equalizer for quick 'n dirty PA EQ and feedback suppression.

A far better way to present such data is in critical bands, which more closely reflect the way we hear frequency ranges. Ozone's spectral display is most useful in that mode.

Anyway, if you can find a copy, SPAN version 1 is still the most useful tool for this type of monitoring. Better than the current version, IMO.
