Vst update hell...
Hey!
Anyone more than me starting to get tired of keeping vst and vsti's up to date? I really would like some sort of service like "Steam" that automatically keeps all bought effects and instruments up to date.

I think that is what Gobbler is trying to be. Unfortunately, it ain't free, and still has some issues.

I made a folder in C:Program files and named it VST64. I made a folder in C:Program file (x86) and named it VST32. Each of the above folders has a subfolder with the mfg name, such as "Voxengo", "Native Instruments", "IK Multimedia", etc. During installation of a plugin I make sure it gets installed to the intended folder that I have created. The only exception is that I let Cakewalk use the default for its plugins. Only third party plugs go to the folders I created. Now I know where to find every plugin. Once you get into the habit of doing this, you always know where all your VST are located. Works for me. Don't forget to add these paths to Sonar's VST path so Sonar knows where to find them.

Thanks mikedocy, I have considered this approach before but I thought it might cause issues with any VSTs that don't give you the option on installation and just assume their own default location. If you then put them somewhere else manually after installation it might confuse their "manager" programs e.g. Waves Central, Native Access etc? Then again, if it works for you maybe it's time to try it myself. Apologies metz, didn't mean to hijack your thread.

this is good advice, but i would do one thing differently: make the custom "VST64" and "VST32" folders outside the "Program Files" hive, as that has extra security that can cause trouble... mine are "C:\VST64" and "C:\VST32" but i don;t reference the VST32 at all in my DAWs, it's only there for those plugins that insist on installing 32bit versions as well as the 64 (i'm looking at YOU izotope!!)

It won't happen, unfortunately.
It is the nature of software that its installer has to have intimate knowledge of the components being installed, knowledge that is specific to one package and one vendor's practices. Even if all vendors could be convinced to adhere to a standard, there will always be some product-specific, host-specific and platform-specific differences. Even for a single product, there are different conventions between Macs, Windows and Linux systems for where components are stored and how they are handled by the O/S.
Of course, you could have a common installer that establishes firm standards that all participating vendors are required to adhere to, and that was smart enough to support scripted rules for when exceptions to those standards are unavoidable. However, such a utility would require ongoing maintenance and support, and would therefore be a commercial service that vendors - and ultimately their customers - have to pay for.
Look at how many Kontakt library vendors opt out of Native Instruments registration, even though there are benefits to both vendors (piracy protection) and users (convenient updates via Native Access). It's because of cost that vendors eschew that service. I know I don't want to pay an extra hundred bucks for a product just to make updates more convenient.
A more probable scenario would be to let each vendor create his own installer, but to convince them to conform to some agreed-upon UI. That way, you can hide complexity and proprietary elements behind a familiar, friendly user interface. Meldaproduction, Cakewalk and Native Instruments already have very good multi-product installers that could serve as a universal model. This falls way short of the ideal expressed by the OP, e.g. a one-click update for everything, but it'd be a step in the right direction.

I don't think that'll ever happen. If you stick to a couple of bundles (like NI Komplete), it makes authorization/updates pretty easy. 1001 individual plugins is a logistical PITA.  If you have a lot of individual plugins, consider paring down.

A lot of plugins I have are end of life, no need to update.
A lot of plugins don't get updated all that frequently.
It seems that those which do have their own installation/upgrade management, so I don't have to worry too much about maintaining those.
So basically, I'm not feeling the pain.

Besides the plugins that have its own managers (like NI Komplete, Play, Cakwalk etc) I never really update unless something is buggy or broken. Once - or maybe twice - a year I sit down and do a update session of my plugs and leave it at that. I usually do this when doing major updates to the OS. If the plugs works, I don't see the point in stressing about updating plugs, even if the update contain some fancy functions.
For the past few years I have made a point in not caring about "system administration" and rather use my stuff to make money and have the time to get drunk instead.
