WARNING VIRUS CRYPTOLOCKER!! I LOS ALL MY SONAR PROJECTS
I was attacked by some variant of the Cryptolocker virus. This virus encrypts your files and requests a payment in Bitcoins to deliver the encryption key. In my case it encrypted all my .cwp and .nff files (melodyne files). I was able to recover some projects that Sonar saved automatically. I suspect that the virus entered my PC through a USB stick or a removable disk. I keep trying to find some tool that solves my problem because there are no guarantees that by paying the ransom receive the key.

Always have a backup drive with a current backup on it but unplugged when not in use today.

I don't know how to help the situation now that you're stuck with this virus. Like bitman says, I keep several different back ups on external drives (alternating back ups on rotations). If I had that situation occur, I would likely just reformat or even replace the hard disk and restore from a back up. The situation described is one more affirmation that back up drives are simply good practice to avoid heartache.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

the above is good advice, and the easiest way to put things right, but unfortunately not much help after the fact if you don't have a back up routine in place. (which reminds me i am going to do another back up right now) again, won't help you much in your current situation, but you can learn from it and start a regular backup routine for the future. so can't help, that would suck big time :) best of luck

To find which cryptolocker variant you got (you need one encrypted file) go here https://id-ransomware.malwarehunterteam.com/Once you know which variant you have, you MAY be able to decrypt your files. Many variants of this virus have been reverse engineered and unlock keys can be generated with free software.

Hi. My first post as a newbie to Sonar, but not to the crypto. As a PC shop owner, we've dealt with these on numerous occassions for customers. Unfortunately there is no solution to any of the recent variants, so please dont pay for a fix from any other party. We have been 100% successful when we pony up the ransom for our customers $$. You are time limited, so if you are considering paying for the unlock, do not let the time expire. Before paying, make a copy of one file on a second machine (not internet connected) and rename the extension to the correct .cwp etc, and ensure that it is a real crypto and not a simple file renamer. Sorry to hear you have been hit. Normal entry is through emails that take you to a site. As mentioned above, virus will travel to all connected drives and network shared drives.

- Always have one or more backups. I use an automatic backup to FTP using FreeFileSync, as I described in this topic.
- Always have a good antivirus active. I use Bitdefender, which has been extremely accurate, which has already detected and prevented various attacks.

Backups only save projects. The time-consuming part is re-installing and re-registering all software. Making regular ISOs after every install is also required. If you pay, you finance the attack on the next victims.

i think when most people (at least i do) say 'back up' they mean making a disk image, so there is no time lost reinstalling etc, 15/20 minutes and you are up and running as if nothing happened.

Sorry to hear of the trouble! But back up images are as easy as a $50 external USB drive and the Macrium Reflect free image backup software. I would also advise, in addition to your current antivirus, that you also add an anti-exploit defense, such as that provided by Malwarebytes, or HitmanPro.Alert. These have non-signature based, behavior detection algorithms that are designed to detect and intercept encryption type malware exploit methods. They are designed to work side-by-side with your current AV programs.

Im a bit reckless myself (sure some may even call me a fool) But I don't do disk images anymore. I used to But it was useless for me as I have gone almost 10 years without a problem. At one point I had 2 PC (DAW And a Surfer) with a mouse keyboard box (KVM Switch) but that got old. Because sometimes I had focus problems when switching from PC number 1 to PC number 2. So about 2 years ago I decided to only back up Projects only. I don't frequent unfamiliar sites, always have my Anti Virus up to date and just take caution. I am aware that not matter how safe you are there is always a risk. However there are ways to decrease your chances of an attack. -Don't open attachments you are not sure about. -Don't click on links sent you in emails (unless you know exactly who they are) Some links, using prefixes and familiar name beginnings. Example: FaceBooks com. Attackers are getting smarter by the minute. -Don't ever download something you are not sure about.

but it's not just virus, malware etc ( i don't worry about them either, don't even run av's or anything, i believe mostly good computer habits is the main thing, only had one virus back in 1998, it's a non issue for me), you have hard drive failure etc, i would rather be back up and running in 15 minutes than still installing and setting up 2 weeks later i don't have any problems either, but if and when the time comes that i do, i will be more than thankful for my backup images

That really sucks, man. I've had a couple of my customers hit by it, and at least at the time I last investigated it (~3 years ago) there was no cure. Needless to say, those customers now do backups religiously! I'd definitely explore microapp's suggestion above, though. Here's some information about how the virus was reverse-engineered, which led to the arrest of the original instigator. Unfortunately, the script kiddies got hold of it and decided they wanted to be millionaires, too. Be warned that these viruses attack every drive they can detect, including external drives and mapped network shares. Backups are therefore only a preventative if you make your backup and then disconnect the drive. Note that it only checks for mapped drives (that have been assigned a drive letter). Because my day-job software depends on a shared folder, I've since abandoned my previous habit of mapping it to a drive letter and now reference it via a UNC path (e.g. \\server\share_name). But mostly I encourage my users to make frequent backups.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I infected a machine with a variant of this the other day under Lab conditions (I work in Information Security). Unfortunately where Sonar defaults its files is normally where Crypto starts to encrypt the files. Very sorry to hear of your woes and there has been some sound advice here, namely "Backup". Do a weekly or daily if you can and then keep that backup offline. Even better, do a backup of a backup also. I *never" put USB drives into my machine without checking them out first - I have a "dirty" laptop that has multiple VMs to infect which I will try these things on first.

Here's an option that I think should work for you guys to be able to create automatic backups to ttached drives (internal or external) or even another computer on your network if you have one, but will also protect those backups from being mowed down by a virus such as this (actually a malicious encryption program if you want to be literal). In business we use Crashplan (Pro) for a number of clients for offsite backups. Well, Crashplan also makes a personal version that is free if you are only using your own storage (i.e. not CP Cloud copies). What's different about this from something like FreeFileSync or a Robocopy or something is that the local copy that is made is encrypted so that it is not readable outside of the Crashplan environment. When you backup or restore, you use the Crashplan application to do it, which uses an ID/Password and the signature derived from the computer itself to encrypt the files. From Windows Explorer, they are just a bunch of unreadable files - ironically, kind of like what you are trying to protect them from! but YOU are controlling the process instead of some criminal. Here's some info about the Archives and why: https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/4/Backup/CrashPlan_ArchivesHere's where you can get the free copy for download: https://www.crashplan.com/en-us/download/ This is a legitimate backup company, not some Shareware/Freeware thing. Check it out. Interested in your feedback if you have any. I have been slack here at the house for some time and this kicked me into gear to do this for myself as well - I harp on it many times a week to people at the office and I'd be pretty sad if I lost all my work. Drive space is cheap. The program is free. What's the downside?
