WAV and Soundfonts Help working this out

I haven't used soundfonts - have heard them play, etc - but I have used WAVs.

I understand that a soundfont has a WAV file inside it.

ok using both WAV and soundfont seems redundent so i would like to go with one or the other. Which would you use WAV or soundfont and why?

I have seen on the internet that the soundfont file can be converted to a WAV file and does this change the sound? And are there any good freeware for doing this?

I would also like to get a freeware soundfont player that is a standalone so I can audition the sounds.

Weather soundfont or WAV should they be put onto a portable HD such as a MY BOOK Elements then called from that HD to be used with Sonar?

Some vsts come with very big samples should they (the sound samples be put onto a portable HD  such as a MY BOOK Elements then called from that HD to be used with Sonar?

a soundfont is multi samples. so many wav's.. and the other element is the mapping of them..

    e.g.

you have rhodes-c1 to c5.. 1 sample per octave.. but you spread that c1 sample across all of the octave "1" notes

Thanks Fog for "a soundfont is multi samples. so many wav's.. and the other element is the mapping of them.. "

BTW the link to the sfz is for a vst not a standalone - lestwise it wants to be into sonar's vst folder.

You have to download SFZ + Plus from the cakewalk online store. It's free now, but you still have to go through the steps at the store to get it.

Once you get it you have to change the 'Mode' settings to PR32 otherwise you get a 'Not enough memory error'.

A quick way to make sure your SF2 file is working is to click on the dark gray bar at the bottom of the SFZ + window. It's a mini piano keyboard but the graphics aren't there.

    Good luck

The above is a copy/paste from another post I made a while back.

    For StandAlone Operation of SFZ+:

In the installation directory, you will see a red 8th note icon. That is the .exe for the StandAlone version. You can rightclick on it and send a shortcut for it to the desktop.
