WDM Drivers Via Project5 Work, But ASIO...

...being my desired type of driver to use doesn't work very well - specifically, just in terms of overall output of volume.

For instance, I have the master volume and MIDI instrument's volume completely maxed out within Project5 Version 2.0, yet I can barely hear it via headphone or my speakers connected to my M-Audio 1814. The 1814's software interface to the extrernal audio device shows the weak signal in volume... but, within Project5 the meters look to be just fine... perplexing to me.

I am almost sure the ASIO drivers functioned perfectly for me on my older laptop... [not using it today, however] ... under Sonar 4.0 Producer Edition. Yet, with this particular setup I am using tonight [Note: The same M-Audio 1814 Firewire Breakout Audio Device-Box, if you will, that I typically use with my laptop.] - along with a different PC that is truly better, faster, and more efficient than my laptop is - the desktop PC I'm using tonight is an AMD Athlon +3400 64-bit compatible processor running 32-bit as of now that also sports 1.0 GB DDR SDRAM, and a 250 GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive...just to name some of its features... plus, I am using Project5 Version 2.0, not Sonar 4.0.

The MIDI responsiveness (no delay noticed by me) is great under ASIO (WDM it sucks)... yet, WDM works with the output of volume under the Project5 umbrella where as ASIO doesn't produce nearly enough volume.

In fact, if a Windows XP System Alert audible sound just happens to kick in for some reason while outside the Project5 application - that alert is very loud when compared to anything I generate sound-wise using ASIO drivers via Project5... so, does anybody have an idea as to what I could do to solve this issue of mine?

Thanks so much for reading.

Sincerely,
Michael H Page JrMHPjr Studios

I just tried it myself with my FW 410, and you are right. The sound with P5 on the FW 410 is OK in WDM, but ASIO is very low; furthermore, when I switched back to WDM, it was still low-I had to select DirectSound (which was quite loud) and then WDM before I could get my volume back. Very odd. This is on both my desktop and laptop, so it's not the individual computer. Have you contacted M-Audio tech support?

Did you try the other justification settings in options/audio? LSB, MSB 24, 32? It sounds like that's what it is to me.

My FW1814 is set to Bit depth:24, Justify:24MSB

this should almost be a sticky sound card config thread

we get this about once a month

do what aggie says and change the bit depth and MSB
    it'll almost assuredly get louder

That did it for me, Dave. Well, to be fair, I haven't tried it with the laptop yet, but with the desktop either 24MSB or 32MSB seem to do nicely--I think I get a bit more volume with 32. I left it at 32 because that's what it first came up as when I switched it to 24-bit (as I was going to do anyway)--just changed to MSB. Tried the other settings out of curiousity, though. MHP, have you tried it?

Yep, M-Audio 24/192 PCI is the same, using 24 MSB on this card will work.

Think wiki. I added this tip to the FAQ and to the Hardware Integration pages on the wiki.
