"The Payment" - a classic horror story re-told

    story:
it's a little ditty about 2 brothers and a lycanthrope.......
it's loosely based on the original wolfman movie, the one where larry talbot gets bitten by the werewolf, and he see's the pentagram in his hand; he knows he's phucked, so he goes to the old gypsy woman who knows about these things, to find a cure, and she basically tells him the only thing for him to do, is to kill himself......
    what a bum deal.
anyway, these 2 brothers have been partying all night, drunk as skunks, and one of them staggers out into the moor, and proceeds to meets his maker.
the remaining brother wants revenge, but has sobered up now, and has figured out that he'd better get some kind of ammunition...
....so he goes to see the gypsy-witch, to get some aconite (wolfsbane) and a spell here and a prayer there, and believes that he's well prepared, and he goes out to the moor to get his revenge.
but that's not what he gets......

    “The Payment”
    Written by RF Gilliland

    Nightime, on the moor
    drank up all the mead
    mist is in the air
    full moon, did the deed.
    never saw the evil...
that poor ole son of a b!!tch
felt the claws that gripped his throat
yeah, he was dead without a twitch.
"it's your brother down on the moor,
with his head down at his feet!"
    drink the aconite, tonight
    toast the witches curse
pray to whoever you believe in
to pass over you the worst
it's your brother on the moor,
with his head down at his feet
and the debt has not been paid in full
    will you, your maker, meet?
    run into the moor
    and see the evil eye
    upon you, cast a glance,
and the payment, it is nigh.

Nice!  This is an actual story with real lyrics, with a really awesome song behind it too.  Sure beats my halloween song. ;)  Great stuff as usual!  And yes... it does sound a bit like Yes (their later stuff).

and i dig comparisons because they're useful to putting ideas into words.....
but would someone please take the time,

    LOL
    just one.
seriously, i just don't hear it, at all.
and everyone else seems to hear it...
i figure i'm just missing a whole batch of tunes where they changed their style or somthing....
i'd love to hear it, so i'm not missing it.
    not a rant..
and to be fair, i quit listening to yes when they got into the rabin years, probably actually quit listening as far back as "Drama".

glad you liked it john, it was fun to record, for sure.

    thanks man.

    noisy
appreciate the listen and comment daniel, the idea of making this song create visuals was definitely the strongest push on the arrangment...
this took a long time, and a lot of different versions, for me to get it to where it felt the most visual.

LOL, yea, i think you told me that once before, when i posted earlier versions of this thing...
    heheh, "Aconite".
not easy to sneak into a lyric.....

around here, they call it "Monk's hood".

    and it's quite pretty...
but it is also called "Wolf's Bane", which was too obvious for the lyric!
in old times, they used to use this to kill wolves.
    it means 'without struggle'
which seems appropriate and somewhat ironic, eh?
that lead break was cool, because the amp was on the verge of feeding back the whole time, and all i had to do was slide my finger to the note and bend, and the amp just grabbed it and took off with it.
    i like that.

    thanks for listening!

Your vocal stylings sound similar to Jon Anderson, i.e. your phrasing, your lyrical vocabulary level, your tenor range, your frequent doubling/harmonies style, etc.  Your instrument parts (like Yes) are edgy and aggressive, and have odd/challenging time signatures and rhythms, in a "progressive rock" kind of way, not a "metal" way.  I just skimmed the "Union" album and several of the songs seemed to have that same feel to them.  I think most of Yes's catalog, especially from the '80s and beyond, is similar.

honestly, about the only thing i remember hearing of their later stuff was the owner of the lonely heart stuff, and based on that, i don't hear any resemblance at all...
