Not tried Dimension Pro but Sampletank 2 XL is exceptional value for money for "bread and butter" sounds.

Whichever you get, make sure you use this with it: http://news.harmony-central.com/Newp/2002/Talent.html - it's an effect rather than a synth, but it goes in your audio track after the synth.

SampleTank, SonicSynth,Omnisynth are all romplers. And as such they do have great sounds. If all you want to do is do sounds, Atmosphere and Trilogy and well you get the Idea. Dimension is not a rompler but it can function as one. If at some point you'd like to PLAY with sound get Dimension Pro. Want to tweak thoses presets? Do dimension. It's open ended and allows sound maniplulation on a level that a rompler can only drean of. The others allow some messin around but serrious sound design is only possible in something like Dimension. Choose a preset and play? get a rompler. Easy, fast, no complicated anything. Be warned though if you get Dimension, you will get the bug and want all the cakewalk synths. Think p5-2, in it you'l get quite a few software synths and well tons of fun too.

Nothing compares to the Tassman 4 and the UltraAnalog-1 from AppliedAcousticsSystems, don't buy anything before you have tried them out. I guarantee you, they will blow everything else away. Besides, Tassman is modular, you can build your own synths exactly the way you want them, and you can use Tassman's FX sections as inserts on your tracks. Awesome sound quality and great value for money. Best $ I've ever spent on software instruments. And I've spent some....

I have Tassman. Bit of a bear by way of learning curve if you want to build your own synths but it rocks. If your an audio/comp geek it has some power to it. But as a starter synth? I'd be hard pressed to say start here. But options it has, and tons of em.

OH now were cooking. Vaz is one of those synths that if you love to tweak it can occupy you for quite a while. It does help if you have some knowledge of modular synth set up.

    Sonar 5- Vegas 6, Pentagon, Z3ta+ ,SFZ+ ,Fm7, Tassman3, Vocator, SoundForge 6, Vsampler 3, Project 5-2, Dimension Pro, Rapture and 2 kick ass DawBox machines:)+)
