WISH LIST - Cakewalk Sonar - Fix Delete Hole Please (or implement Ripple Edit)
To Whom It May Concern (and all Cakewalk users affected by this issue): Please, in the next release, fix the Delete Hole issue that has plagued Sonar since it was broken in the Lexington Version (it works properly in the Kingston version). Or institute Ripple Edit that was promised about 2 years ago. Here is an extensive thread describing and outlining the issue: http://forum.cakewalk.com...-m3404822.aspx#3404822Of particular note is SquireBum's post #16 that has a perfect animation of the problem along with the previous versions where it worked properly ( http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3405303). This affects Audio tracks and Midi tracks. NOTE: If this issue affects you, please just put in a "DITTO" reply so Cakewalk can get an idea of how many people this issue affects. I'm not trying to slam Cakewalk, I would just like to upgrade to the latest version so I can start using the new features (still using Kingston). Thanks for listening. Wally

It would seem that Ripple editing is such a complex feature to implement that it's taking longer than expected.
I think it was only announced about 6 months ago. The Sonar membership program with rolling updates has only been going for 2 years.

I think we will all benefit from ripple editing. The fact Cakewalk have announced it as an upcoming feature seems to indicate that they understand how much we want it. I am happy to wait until it's fully baked though rather than a buggy early release:)

Good memory! It was June 1, 2016. Ripple editing goes deep into the roots of the code. It's not trivial. To use an automotive analog it's not about replacing the brake pads, but rebuilding the engine. Time spent fixing delete hole would take time away from developing true video-editor-style ripple editing (at least I hope that's what they have in mind), which would be better anyway. Meanwhile, there are workarounds.

FWIW Delete Hole does work with audio projects. It's MIDI tracks that get screwed up if a note extends over where a split is occurring. The workaround is to split MIDI notes at region boundaries manually. The beauty of implementing ripple editing is it would not only fix delete hole, but also allow "slide over to make room" to work consistently, which has the same issue with MIDI notes. However as I've pointed out before, you have to be careful to turn off ripple editing when you don't want clips other than the ones you're working on affected. I've really messed up some Vegas projects by forgetting to turn it off after doing an edit.

Yes, the video is a fine example of ripple editing. However, it's interesting to note that it isn't perfect there either. If you'll notice at around 6:50' he shows how easy it is to delete a section utilizing Reaper's region but notice that it didn't just delete the "region"/selection (in this case the verse), it also deleted the next "region" (chorus) probably because that was the length of the clip he clicked on (in spite of the region selection). A good indication of the complexity of coding and trying to cover all scenarios. BTW, I really enjoy Gioia's videos. His Mixing in Reel Time video on Groove3 shows how efficient editing can be in Reaper (at least the way he works :-)

Regarding 6 months ago, point taken and noted. Regarding complaining, that is not my intent. Just trying to raise awareness that this bug still exists. I've sent in a couple of bug reports to let them know. Did it right when I came across it. My goal with this post was to bring this issue back to the forefront of their minds. They have so many new features and bug fixes since Kensington, but have not seemed to address this issue. They say it is because "Ripple Edit" is coming soon. Meanwhile, all the new cool layouts, screens, etc. get the lion's share of attention on these forums when they are changed or buggy. Then some fix comes out with the new release for the "squeaky wheels." I'm just trying to champion this fix by becoming a "squeaky wheel" again. Again, workarounds are really not an option due to the speed with which I need to work on long form voice over projects. If there is empty space between audio clips, I need to close the gap between them, and move on. ...and I think others would benefit, just not sure how many. Thanks for all your comments.

I can confirm that delete hole is working on audio data. I just tried after reading this. I actually had to go to the manual and carefully read how to do it. I honestly thought the feature was MIA because I delete data by dragging, right clicking and selecting delete. There's no delete special option if you drag to highlight and right click to bring up the menu. Using the timeline and a higher level menu option are required. I'm feeling stupid again. In my defence, I think the bakers should tweak this so that I can swipe across the data and access delete special by right clicking. No?

I'm hoping that we can edit multiple tracks as if we were editing the stereo mix down file. If I cut a section and paste insert it elsewhere in the stereo file, then what I hear played back should sound like when I edit the multitrack file (within reason, taking into account that effects or long MIDI notes that overlap the edit area might differ slightly). Basically as I described here in the ideas forum: http://bakery.cakewalk.co...ting-a-stereo-wav-file

I will formulate my statement differently: For those who think that changed in Lexington remove hole behavior in not a bug, everything is fine as before. For those who think that the change is a bug, it is still there in 2017.1 peace

In my experience delete hole does not work correctly with audio either. If there is no data on a particular track in a selected range, any clips after the deleted range on that track are not moved.

As mentioned above, data being present in the "hole" for audio seems to be required. This is similar to the thread quoted in the OP with the comments about SONAR deselecting tracks which have no data in them prior to processing the delete hole algorithm. In the first video posted, you will notice that track 3 is deselected when you process delete hole. It seems to only make sense that the deselection occurs prior to the delete hole function. In the second video, you will notice that Track 3 remains selected.

Certainly that is what is happening, but I don't think it makes much sense. It worked correctly (for audio at least) in the Kingston release. Hopefully it will again when ripple editing is introduced.

That way if someone (just like you) is having this problem and searching for help they stumble on this thread looking for a work around but cant find one because the OP simply doesn't want to hear it. As much as we want to believe this is "my" thread, it really belongs to cakewalk.
