RE: Wait for Thee! 2nd Vox/Mix Revision! 2008/10/21 14:09:08 (permalink)
MGH: I was using inferior (non-condensor) mics and destructive-editting on this last year. Thanks for the 2nd crit; 'means an aweful lot to me. Hopefully, I'll redo the vox-chain entirely (in a month or so) and clarify a bit.

Larry: Thanks for validation and encouragement. I appreciated the Beatles in their later hippie-stuff.

Rick: Hopefully I'll seriously focus on the bass line, my next immediate step ... and lowering the interfering arpeggiation.

SpaceDuck: I think I got in over my head and forgot to reconcile the bass line which remains murky. (*Someone* dropped it 2 dcbs during the *clipping fiasco* and forgot to re-adjust it)
there are parts which might benefit from some good old fashioned woof. You could do this with EQ, or you could simply double the bass with a lower octave (but really quiet, because I like the bass line where it is)

SD, I subconsciously love a full-driving arpeggio bass line with woof, thanks immensely for validating this construct and giving me technical ideas to start with.
Bass-lines seem so sublime and vital for every mix … even without the lower rumble. Don’t let me forget their necessity in every mix.

Mark
: Excellent crit. Thank you (immensely). You noted the emotive dissonance of the vox, which is difficult to reconcile with busy-ness, multi-counterpoints, frenetics, etc, which are obvious pasted-ins. The lyrics (written 20+ years ago) seemed originally way too boring and melancholic for repeated listening (by myself and others) ... way before home-recording became real. Also, my vocals do still lack both emotive and emotional punch (at present). But methinks groaning melancholy must give way to groaning hope and orchestration with "a little strength that remains".

In sum: Awaiting some vox clarity, piano adjustments, and a stronger bass line.

That sounds much better Philip, the song is coming through nicely now I like the 'pealing bells' motif by the way, missed that before. This is coming into focus now; I'm getting the sense of listening to an orchestra or large band from in front rather than being in the middle of it..hope that makes sense!

Hi Philip,

I agree, this does sound excellent now - all the instrumentation sounds well placed in the mix. The bass lines really caught my attention - well defined in the mix and well played - I love the tone.

My only crit, maybe add a bit of vocal doubling (which I have an affinity for) at various points, maybe when you sing 'Wait for Thee Lord'- or maybe try a subtle harmony vox there - JMO.

The lead vocal does sound much more defined in this mix.

Cheers,
Doug

OK, I made some not-so-final minor revisions again, as per Randy, Doug, Spaceduck, Larry, Mark, and Mgh,
I strengthened the bass line and cut down some of the interfering piano arpeggio.

Doug (and all): I already vocal doubled and applied serial compression (Voxengo Voxformer once on the main lead track, again on the vocal bus)
... principally as YEP inspired me on vocal doubles. The telephone-vox-double was panned widely (70-80% LT I think ... while inspired by Spaceduck's technique) ... with volume envelopes on the telephone (vox-clarifying) track and vox-bus compression, ... Now, I have all the vocal clarity I can stand, presently.

Mark: I'll try/practice, emotional cries, emotives, falsettos, Magicshow-techniques, etc. later ... it should take months with 21 songs to to work on ... to improve my vocals

Please allow me to thank all of you for your top-notch crits and encouragement!
I hope to translate all your inspirations to my other songs.

P.S. (FWIW) SoundClick ratings (which we all know is "just-for-fun" ... shot up last night (#15/92,000 in Pop, #4 in CCM). Heeheehee! I noticed many of you guys all hit #1 for a day or so in your genres.
Did not Mgh hit #1 in Pop or something (I think so)? Didn't James (SMB) hit #1 after his numerous crits? Etc.

It was the first thing that came to mind.

Should have added...very interesting and complex piece. I enjoyed it and it certainly represents a clever musical mind.

Cheers

Thanks Thal for the crit ...

I just read about poor Sid on Wikipedia; some of my kin (Floyd fans, somewhat) seem to have suffered similar mental illness. I'm still here, to the best of my knowledge.

Hi Philip

Epic stuff indeed, the mix sounds awsome on my hi-fi.

I missed the previous version so I can't compare but this is a top notch production - kudos to you for dreaming up all the parts and then putting them all together so well.

Impressive

Steve
