Walking backwards

I added backwards treadmill walking to my gym routine yesterday. Apparently it helps with a whole host of ailments and conditions including lower back pain, bad knees, tight hamstrings, injured ankles and feet. It also improves balance and coordination, and burns significantly more calories than walking forwards.

I must say I felt great after 15 minutes walking backwards on a slight incline, and I'm wondering if it could become socially acceptable outside (providing I wore some kind of mirror attachment).

Walking sideways is good, too.  It helps stretch the hamstrings.

I do the sideways running in a gym class I sometimes go to. It's really hard on the legs.

Walking backwards on a treadmill would make it easier to scope out the talent in the gym I guess...

Walking backwards up a steep hill is one of the exercises that really surprise you.
"Do I have muscles in such places? Obviously I do, 'cause I feel cramps!"

If you do it carefully and really move your hips pushing yourself upwards, it's a really good addition to your normal walk-jog routines.

I imagine that I'm walking, flipping, biking, and roller blading backwards on a tightrope 100' above a pit filled with sharks outfitted with landmines on their heads.

It's a form of mental gymnastics.

When I used to work out regularly at the gym (to stay in shape for cricket/B-Ball), I always ran on the treadmill for 20min (to sweat it out)  and then lifted weights (for the whole body) for the next 1 to 1.5 hrs........
Yeah, it was a long gym day and did this 4x a week, but I have to say that I was in the best shape of my life. This was my routine for close to 10 years.......then I got married and had 3 beautiful children. I realized that I get my best sleep while watching Dora the Explorer.

I was told it was best to do it the other way around, i.e. weights first cardio after. I love strength training and the feeling it gives you later, but I have to be careful about how much weight I lift because of an ongoing back problem, as well as the occasional bout of golfer's elbow in one arm and tennis elbow in the other (which I'm sure have been partly caused by years of playing classical guitar). I see these guys in the gym who are straining themselves so ridiculously hard with such bad form, I feel like going up to them and saying "one word...HERNIA."

I'm a YMCA cheapskate, and unfortunately my exercycle views consist mainly of 200lb 60 year olds, with all due respect to 200lb 60 year olds.
