Want to update to Win 8.1
Hey there and Happy New Year! I asked before about success stories with Windows 8.1 update. I personally had horrible experience on my other newly built computer when updating from 8.0 to 8.1, it lost USB support and I ended up reinstalling Windows. By doing this, I learned that 8.1 update is not reversible- it would not do back to 8.0 via system restore from last best known configurations, system refresh or any other method- it is permanent. My music computer is still 8.0 and it bothers me. I want to update, for no valid reason. It just that I am getting so used to 8.1, I start feeling difference and to me 8.0 is lagging and things are not in the right place, compared to 8.1. But everything is working (other than Maschine controller when connected during the boot). Presonus told me they are compatible. Not sure about Motif XS MIDI driver. Motu MIDI should be compatable, Roland V-Synth and Fantom G- about to find out... I am concerned with my VST plug ins. I have Komplete 9 Ultimate, and all together Sonar counts 195 plug ins at this time. All my plug ins are paid software synths. I am afraid- all of them will go out of order or disappear from the list- I hardly remember what should be on my list. Can IK Multimedia soft synth handle 8.1? They are old synths. Feel free to talk me out of it. Thank you.

Just to give you a confirmation, the MOTU MIDI drivers work fine under 8.1. I have 3 midi express 128 interfaces hooked up with no issues.

Thank you, this is what I have as well. Good. It would help to understand what exactly Win 8.1 updates. Does it do anything to the file locations? I know that my Yahoo and Norton toolbar stopped working, (because it is 32 bit or what ever) and only few days ago Yahoo fixed their. If it only updates Metro interface, then we should be fine, but I heard it was something about ASIO driver...

I didn't have much trouble updating. I'm not that thrilled with the update but it wont hurt that much if you like 8 to begin with. Just be sure that you have 8.1 drivers for all your gear.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I know I'll need Windows 8 at some point, but Windows 7 does everything I need to do except enable touch for Sonar (which is why I will upgrade eventually).

i couldn't upgrade. some driver error that even 2 ms techs couldn't figure out how to get around or what it refers to. must have wasted a full week over the course of 3 months. tried all the advice online. i'm on 8 until ms can deliver a better installer for 8.1 or the 8.2 installer is more forgiving...

+1 This is the biggest thing to verify. The "non-reversible" part of Win8 made me back out of any notion of upgrading beyond Win7 for now myself. I have not forgotten Vista enough to trust MS yet....

I have 8.1 on 2 other new builds. I would not worry if it was new build installing Sonar and plugins. I like Windows 8. I am worrying about the update process itself. It is different when you install from scratch and when you have a lot of software installed and you updating, hoping it would still work. But I want to update my drivers, and even my motherboard (Asus) posts updates only for Win 8.1. My other computer updated fine, with no issues at first, but then USBs failed and I could not log in because I could not use keyboard and mouse. Have all drivers? Well- they may not have all official drivers, such as Yamaha Motif XS. It says- Windows 8, so you i install on 8.1 and hope it works. But it is different when it already installed and may panic when 8.1 kicks in, because of all the files directories and such... I am just so tempted... If it was Win 7 to 8- I would not update, but 8 to 8.1 sounds like a must. Most of my soft synth companies would say, "Sure, it works with Win 8." I would say, "How about 8.1?", and they would say, "We dont know. It probably works..."

I didn't update to 8.1 because 8.0 is working great for me.
There were a lot of horror stories about win 7 vs win 8 too, especially the lack of a start button and menus, but I actually rarely ever used the start menu as I found using desktop shortcuts and file explorer to be quicker, and windows 8 boots up extremely fast when installed to an SSD.
I still cant be asked to download 8.1, and don't know if it can be installed without having to reinstall the whole OS, which I don't want to do.

I lost USB support, too, but a Google search helped me find the problem. A USB Asus driver. I still have a weird bug when my Computer wakes from sleep my USB audio box doesn't work. I have to unplug it, and plug it back in. I have a Presonus, and a Focusrite, and they both do the same. That makes me think it's not a driver issue, a Win 8.1 issue. The only reason why I like Windows 8 or 8.1 is how fast it boots. My Windows 7 and my brothers Win7 computer take forever to boot.
AMD FX-8320 Eight-core 16 GB RAM, Win 8 64 bit X2a GeForce GT 640 Focusrite Scarlett 2i2... My opinions expressed here are my own, and may be wrong, or right when compared to yours.

Thank you for your replies. I was updating on the day one, so there was no articles or information on line about USB driver. In fact- I was probably a reason it was created because I was posting about it on every forum, including Microsoft, and called Asus several times. I figured out that it was not just USB driver, it was USB 3.0 boost. Did you have AI Suit installed? It has USB 3.0 boost and I had it activated. So 8.1 worked on the same hardware. All 3 computers have Asus motherboard, 2 are Z87, 1 is Z77- my music computer.

I'll try upgrading to 8.1 soon then since I don't have anything to lose by doing so yet, I also have an Asus board so will check for 8.1 drivers beforehand, and also I'll have to make sure there are drivers for my soundcard. Actually I wont be risking it: 'DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!
I have a Fatal1ty Titanium and I just upgraded to 8.1. The system doesn't recognize the card anymore. If you uninstall and reinstall the drivers, you'll get sound until you restart, but you can't launch any of the Creative Consoles because they don't recognize the card is there.
I tried everything - drivesweeper to get rid of the old drivers, using the PAX drivers - nothing worked. I'm recovering from backup now to go back to Plain old vanilla 8.
I would not upgrade to 8.1 until Creative releases new drivers. The old ones do not work with 8.1. And if you're going to risk it, get a full disk image before you upgrade so you can recover quickly if it all goes to hell.'. I know I should have gotten the Asus STX instead, creative suck :(

Updated yesterday from 8 to 8.1. Much happier with the results and the only thing I had to do was re-register my XLN products. I did make sure I had all the interface updates and Windows 8 updates before I made the jump. It really was quite painless. We all know all our rigs are different. All I can say is I am very happy with the update.

Haha, Alex! You know I am originally from Ukraine, in United States for 15 years. before I moved here, this is exactly how my balcony was looking! Thanks for the share- I will take it- love the pic. The Asus tech support could not tell me clearly, should I installe drivers from the 8.0 section while I have 8.0, and then after IO update, install 8.1 drivers, or install all 8.1 drivers before the update. I am feeling the right way would be update with what you have and then install 8.1 drivers. However, I would make sure AI Suit is not installed during the update and no USB 3.0 boost activated. I would also have PS2 keyboard and mouse available in case you loose USB like I did. My motherboard did not have that, so I had to reinstall. Last night I turned my computer, worked on it for 3 hours, and then realized- my 2nd monitor is not working. Took me a minute to figure out that it does not work because I set my BIOS to optimized defaults, and that disabled onboard video card. It made me think- I am not looking for any trouble and may be I should wait.
