Warning: Gearslutz site pushing Bitcoin miner file down if you visit it
I didn't know where else to put this for maximum attention. I just went to visit the Gearslutz site and my ESET Nod32 anti-virus blocked an incoming file from it, a 'coin miner'.

There's an article up on CBC about the massive surge in "CryptoJacking" that's been going on. Without blathering it's essentially a less nasty way for the hackers to make money. http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/cryptojacking-mining-1.4572360 They are essentially just stealing CPU cycles (kind of like SETI but of course the user is unaware of the processing bleed) to do intense equations using YOUR system then collecting a paycheque from whomever is requesting the processing power. Unfortunately it does not explain WHO is/would want to do SETI style data processing and pay enough for it to make the hackers flock to it. Weird.

PS: NoScript and AdBlock have been my browser condoms for many a moon now. They are getting a little long in the tooth though and I think I may have to bail on FF because it's gotten stoopid and clunky. Been meaning to check out how to get Opera set up the way I like.

I have no idea what a bitcoin actually is or how it can possibly have a value. I've read stuff, had people who claim to understand it "explain" it to me and I still haven't a scooby-doo wtf it is, how you get one or what you're supposed to do with it if you have one (or more).

I ditched FF awhile back and replaced with Opera. It was pretty easy to get it more or less how I had FF set up. The things that annoyed me most until I got used to is that in Opera a pinned tab will change to the new url if you click on another bookmark while viewing it unlike FF which keeps the pinned tab as is and opens the new url in another. Seems wrong to me - the fact that I have pinned it pretty much implies that I want to refer back to it at some point, so why would I want to navigate away from it. The other thing is that in Opera you can't close a pinned tab without unpinning it first, which makes the first thing even more stoopid IMO. Other than that it's been quite painless for me.

Think of cryptocurrencies (such as Bitcoin but there are many others now) kind of like "virtual" gold bars/ingots/whatevs. Unlike regular national currencies (Dollar/Pound/Euro) that can be artificially manipulated by govs/banks/economics/etc your gold bar is going to maintain market value. Not to say there can't be fluctuations in the price of gold but it generally goes UP in value over time because it is a finite and physical entity. So instead of a pile of gold bars you get a digital file that you can store wherever and transfer to others as needed (in exchange for services, products or real cash). Also much like (unstamped) gold it is untraceable which is why it is so popular amongst criminals and weird internet libertarians. As for how you get them/spend them I think (and don't quote me on this) there are various crypto currency exchanges online where you can buy and sell them. Not sure if it requires any special software or how the process of transferring/adding to one's pile looks like in real life because I've never used it (though I may accept bitcoin for my own mayhem someday if there seems to be a need for it). It's pretty weird stuff BUT, and knowing you and your kind of "stick it" attitude, it is pretty useful and counter culture if that's your bag. I'm fine with Paypal for now. They pound us hard with the fees and crap (and just generally annoy me) but a) I know how it works, b) it's pretty simple to use and is accepted more broadly than crypto currencies and c) is far less likely to arouse the suspicions of the taxman/Johnny Law (if you aren't actually a criminal/tax dodger). To sum up it's like burying gold in your back yard except instead of gold it's bits and bytes and instead of your backyard it's any digital storage (whether it be physical like on your computer or a flash drive or in the "cloud"). Now I look forward to someone who ACTUALLY knows WTF they are talking about to correct what I'm sure are multiple inaccuracies in my explanation. Seriously... I probably should get boned up on the durned things if plan to accept them in the future.

There may be some setting that will make things open in new tabs by default. Remember that "open in New Tab/Window" is actually an HTML code and varies depending on what the web designers code in to happen when you click a link. However most browsers have options to overide such coded behavior. I am glad to hear Opera has not turned into a peice of poop though. I used to use it a work MANY moons ago and like it. I just switched to FF on the recomendations of other aspiring intertube nerds so I could load up NoScript and AdBlock. Extensions like that were pretty much an exclusively mozilla thing back then IIRC... but I was WAY dumber back then about computorb stuff. Like even dumber than I am now.

I've come to loathe the internet and digital anything in general with each passing day. Glad I had fun in the 80's and 90's before this whole thing became so crapped up.

I understand all of those words, I just don't see the point. I think I'll just stick to using my actual money to buy actual things.

If there is, then I haven't found it yet. Having just said that it was mostly ok, after the lastest update (yesterday) it was playing up, but it seems to be back to normal today.

Bitcoin is just a massive set of pump-and-dump schemes set in a virtual casino where somebody eventually steals and runs off with everyone's money.
