Warning... Pedal Steel Content

Here is a song I wrote in Jan 2007. I finally got my buddy Robert Stutts to come up to the studio and sing it. He is a much better singer than I and does a good job on this. I did everything except the lead vocal.

Wow! Solid country tune – really, it’s right in the pocket in every way – lyrics, arrangement and vocal. Terrific mix as well (love the pedal). Very impressive. I don’t think I’ve heard any of your tunes before (although I see you’ve been around this site before) – great job. I’ll check out some of your other tunes.

    Hey Steve!

Now that's we call country music!! Good tune, good lyrics, good singing, great sound. Love the way the rhythm guitar blends with the ride cymbal! And the pedal steel was excellent!

Only small quibble is would love to hear some harmony on the bridge.

Now where did we put our dancing boots? :)

Pro level stuff here. Great performance with good instumental balance. I thought the vocal could come up some in the mix. Other than that, this is radio ready. Mr Stutts has a George Strait quality to his voice. Good work.

Great tune, vocal. I thought the rhythm guitars were too loud and too "up front". Setting them back in the mix would make the voice and the great steel guitar really stand out.

    Good job.

    Steve,

Classic Country! I could feel myself two stepping around the dance floor with my wife.

    Absolutely loved it.

It may be my ears, or speakers, but do I hear a banjo in the mix?????

    Great Job.....

Man, I love the pedal steel! Don't really care too much for country, I don't hate it, but I don't listen to it regularly. But, man I love the pedal steel. Who's playing it?

Thank you very much for the comments. My buddy Robert is the real deal...

I experimented with the acoustic volume quite a bit. Yeah... it might be a tad hot. That is two acoustic parts panned L&R in mono. One is played at a lower capo setting and the other is a higher capo setting.
Yes, that would be my not quite ready for prime time banjo playing. I picked it up on trade right before I recorded this. It is a vintage Alvarez Silver Belle. I just learned enough chords for the tune...

The pedal steeler is me. Pedal steel is my primary instrument. I'm playing all the instruments and using DOD for drums.

This was very well produced and put together. Your buddy does sing good. All instrumentation seemd balanced together and the overall song blended nicely. Reall well done piece.

Click on his soundclick link and use the soundclick player instead.

Good tune, but to be honest I thought the mix was a little rough. It was very bright on my system. I thought the strummed guitars were panned a little extreme and the steel was also a little one-sided. All easy to fix though, then you got a winner.

I the mid-70s I played pedal steel about 50% of the night - 5 - 7 nights a week. I had ShoBud single neck, almost bought an MSA double neck, but never did. I haven't played steel since then, I miss it. I love pedal steel.

My old partner, Dan Schafer (who lives in Nashville and has toured with just about everybody from Barbra Mandrell to Shinia Twain), and I were the first people to use palm pedals on our six strings. We had B and G benders and combined with a volume pedal gave some pretty impressive results. Dan now has benders on all six strings and has several instructional videos out and has taught a lot of the Nashville music people the art of bender guitar.

    Good tune, good vocals.

Loved what you did with the acoustics, nice flavoring. Country was my first real exposure to music back in 1978 and 79. This song takes me back.

Pretty good job on this Steve. On my cheap PC speakers at work, I hear the vocals and drums too low in the mix. vocals might stand some EQ and compression. A harmony in the chorus might be effective. But the pedal steel is simply terrific. I'd (nearly) kill to be able to play one. Good work.

I guess I need to get over to the songs forum more often. This must be where you country guys hang out.

I like this song Steve. Robert does a good job on the vox and I really like the steel. All the parts are there but the mix is a little to heavy IMHO. You might try backing off the guitars some during the verses and build the mix as the song progresses. I'd hold off on the banjo till the end. Just my .02.

If you'd like some harmony vox on this, I'd be happy to take a shot at it. I listened to some of your other songs and there's some good ones in there.
