Waveform Pictures Constantly Recomputing

I'm working on a project with about 24 long audio files (each one is about 2 hours long).  Any time I split any clip, the picture of every waveform blanks out and all the pictures have to recompute, which takes a relatively long time due to the length of the files.  This is causing my project to take much longer to edit than it should.  I've tried restarting the project and clearing out the picture cache but that doesn't help.  Also, if I go to Associated Audio Files -> Recompute Pictures it doesn't really help with anything because it still takes a long time to recompute and the second I split any clip it blanks all the waveform pictures again.

Any ideas on what I could do?  It is very frustrating trying to edit the audio without being able to see the waveform!

Thanks!

Is it possible the cache is too small? Clearing the cache won't help if the cache cannot hold the files in the first place. The PicCacheMB can be adjusted in Preferences > Audio > Configuration File. Make sure the Advanced radio button is selected at the bottom of the Preferences UI to see the Configuration File option.

Thanks for the great suggestion but unfortunately that didn't help.  I tried setting the picture cache limit to its maximum setting (2000 MB) but I'm still having the same problem and the total picture cache for this project is <2000MB from what I can tell.

I don't know the nature of the project, but if you're working on it linearly, you can break it into smaller projects. After completing, for example, the first third, you can import those files into the second third. Since you won't have to edit the files from the first third, recomputing of the the second third won't take so long. Then you import both into the final third.
