Waves GUI and Sonar, whats the deal??
Hi! I've started to use some Waves plugins lately. Kramer Master Tape, HLS, HNS etc... All plugins have problems in Sonar where pulling knobs and sliders gets stuck and act in weird ways. The plugs themselves works fine audiowise but their GUI works like crap. Any way around this? I've seen that I'm not the only one to experience these problems. When looking at Waves compability-page it says that the plugs work fine. Obviously they aren't 100% compatible with Sonar so I feel a bit cheated actually. Is there a way to fix this problem? Who is to blame? Cake or Waves? Who's doing it wrong? /M

Metz, it's tough to say whose to blame on this one as I know nothing about how this stuff gets coded or works in different DAWS. But, Sonar is the only program where I have the problem you mentioned. Everything else I use, the Waves knobs and faders work perfectly. This has been the case for me since Waves 7 I believe. There were times when I had to open a plug twice in order for the GUI to show itself. That is fixed thankfully, but now we have the knob/fader issue. Waves 9 is better than 8 with this. I still notice it but it doesn't bother me as bad as it did in 8. 7 was the worst of all. So it's getting better...but at this time, I wouldn't know who to blame...but I sure wish someone would/could fix it. -Danny

Don't know if this will help, but try setting your system theme to as basic (win2000 or classic type) as you can. Some of the newer windows themes seem to compete for graphical resources. Steve

I had a similar problem when I went to V9. I went back to V8 and all is well. I'm missing out on the 64 bit benefit though. Rocky

There may be several possible reasons for this behavior. Have you tried running X1 as "administrator"? This may help. I just did it and the knobs on Master Tape were very smooth. Even though you may be the adminstrator, if you are not right clicking and selecting "run as Administrator" you may have problems. I know in order to register some programs you must run X1 as "administrator" or the plugin activation will not "take", i.e. Dimension Pro and Rapture. Just a thought...

I usually find as long as the "yellow circle thing lights" up,it means your mouse pointer is in the right part of the GUI,to make an adjustment, and don't really feel its that big a deal I spose. When I couldn't get a 64bit version of the Kramer Tape to show up for 2 days,I got a bit spun, but Waves support was right onto it,and it turned out to be a registry deletion needed to be done for that. The only other thing Iv'e had was sometimes when control clicking to duplicate,I would get NO GUI,but THAT has stopped happening now. I guess as its still only a year or so,I'm just still so amazed all this stuff works as well as it does,to be too freaked by it too much?

Make sure you disable XRay when using waves plugins. Not sure about the most recent plugins but prior ones had graphics issues when Xray was active in SONAR. (you have to disable it even if Xray is not on since it sets a windows property always)

I too have problems with the sliders and knobs Not turning All the way in one click and sweeep. Works fine if you open a project, don't pass Audio, play with knobs (work fine), run audio through once and then they don't work right again (have to re-click and drag, more than once most times). I've actually showed waves this Via Cross Loop Connect. Don't know when it'll be fixed. There's been 1 waves update since, but problem is still there.

Waves has MOST certainly heard of it. They witnessed it on my computer. Btw- I have the latest update as of 9/15 and the GUI problem is STILL there.

That's scary that their support claimed to be unaware - this is a fairly common problem experienced for years. Do some google searches and you'll see many instances of it. I had the same issue a few years ago, some common causes were: - as others have said above, disable x-ray - ensure your video drivers are up to date - try different resolutions, I vaguely remember this occurring if resolution was set too high? - ensure you have the latest version of Waves installer (v9 fixed it for me) - I also vaguely remember something about video cards with low amounts of RAM having issues as well. Hope this helps. Russ

I have the latest graphicsdriver, latest installers, latest everything. I've tried disabling x-ray and it didn't work (not sure if I restarted SOnar though, if that's needed. BUT.... It seems to be working better in Sonar X2. At least so far. I've had times recently when it has worked better as well but then started with the weird behaviour again. So it might be a bit early to tell. But all tests have worked so far. I've even offered Waves to send them a video I made of the problem. But they dont seem interested. They say they never experienced the problem and it's working fine on their test setup. That obviously is enough for them. I think it sucks. Because on their DAW-compability site it says X1 is compatible. I also noticed that their NS1 noise reduction worked MUCH better under Sonar X2 for some weird reason. And I'm not talking about the GUI here but sound. In X1 I had to pull the slider up to 80% to get rid of the noise of my guitar. But on X2 20% was enough. And yes, I was testing with a clean new project with the default template. So no weird settings messing about... /M

Working well here ....until V9 , waves were excluded (automaticlly by sonar) by the XrayExclude file (with a list of vendors you can choose to exclude plugins from ) The thing is that i decided to autorise now waves to soncider x ray and it's working great .... Check GPU hardware acceleration and be sure to get certified gpu drivers (i think waves still uses openGL)

Hi; My name is Dave From Waves Tech Support. We are not aware of a general graphic related issue with Sonar X1 and Waves. A common issue our users experience when using Waves on Windows based systems are graphic related. The cause of this is frequently related to incompatible graphic adapters or relatively old drivers. We suggest installing the latest driver for your display adapter. Latest and certified Drivers are available on all manufacturers’ websites. If you still experience issues we would need to look at this case by case. Feel free to contact us by clicking on the “Contact Us” action within your Waves account. Thanks

Hello Dave, Blogman here, I've personally called in repeatedly about this Graphical waves issue. I even did a remote connect via CrossLoop Connect and was able to demonstrate the problem myself as did the waves technician. I'm on a Rain Livebook Studio i7, NVidia GeForce GTS 250M latest updates. Thanks for your help here.

Thought I'd update this thread. I had this exact issue with Waves and resolved it in one go. I changed my Graphics card from an NVIDIA Geforce 7300 (which also would give me BSOD when I tried its latest Win7 64bit drivers, so had to use older version) to a RADEON HD5450. €40 and seems to be most popular in DAWS according to SOS. Now perfect and that was the only changed made. Hope its useful to someone...
