Waves IR-1 On Sale!

$129 for the Waves IR-1, but if you received an email from them, you may have an even better discount! This isn't the IR-L, it's the $500 Verb from Waves.

I bought EastWest Quantum Leap Spaces already, but for the price I could get IR-1, I couldn't pass it up. If you aren't using Convolution Reverbs, you may be missing out on some incredible rooms!

I still hope Altiverb will be available for Windows soon, but until then, these are pretty good!

I am so annoyed that Altiverb 7 hasn't been released for Windows yet! The 32-bit version is seriously unstable on my system! Is anyone using IR-1? Is it any good? And how about custon and/or 3rd party IRs? It's hard to move away from the excellent IR library that Audio Ease have. I used to use Altiverb for a lot foley and dubbing work.

Bit - I have no idea but that is indeed a good question. I have never really liked PerfectSpace. It was such a resource hog and sounds a but metalic and digital to me. But, it's been years since I've tried it so perhaps, now that I have a wünderPC compared to my old stuff, I will suit me better?

I gave up on Altiverb a few years back. I now use a combo of MIR, IR-1 for convo & asst. algo's.

With PerfectSpace, as with any convolution reverb, sound quality is primarily a function of the impulse response file. Yes, some of the bundled IRs do sound metallic or otherwise unpleasant in some way. Those, I think, are included for when you specifically want a metallic or artificial-sounding effect. Fortunately, not all of them are like that. Some are pretty good. Poke around on the 'net and you'll find lots more good IRs to augment the ones Cakewalk have provided.

What I don't know, and partly why I posed the question, is whether two different convolution reverb plugins will produce the same or different results with the same IR. Seems to me they'd be the same or very similar, but I've not tested that assumption myself.

This is one reason why I actually prefer algo reverbs.  I'm not limited to tweaking (if tweaking is even possible) already existing spaces.  Not that I don't use my convolution verbs on occasion...I do...but I much prefer my algos day in and day out.

I see what you mean and I agree. But what I recall when going through them back in the days, was that they all had this unpleasant sound to them and not sounding like "real" spaces even though the IRs claimed to be just that. I can't remember if I tried other IRs with it though. I remember the first time I tried Altiverb. It took me 30 minutes before I ordered my own copy!

I will play around with it and see if I change my mind. I actually have no idea what impact the code have on the IR and how it sounds, I guess I just assumed there were a certain influence but I'm not going to speculate. I'm not smart enough

Ol'Pal - I do use algo reverbs for music, but when creating spaces you can see, movies and TV stuff, IR makes things a whole lot better. Also, for some "real" instruments like choir, strings, brass band etc I like to have them "recorded" in whatever type of room that suits the rest of the song. I'm an avid IR enthusiast but I couldn't do without the good old reverbs either

Read your IR-L manual, the different features between both (& 360) are explained there.

For creating spaces,  film & symphonic I usually prefer using an algo tail while shortening the convo ir's down a bit & treating them like er's.

It's the IR itself that contains the 'sound'. Convo's typically have alot of buildup in the low end. Use a HPF, it's too or metallic try a LPF.

Those of us longing for Altiverb 7 on the PC might be satisfied with this:

Combined with their own IRs and the free Samplicity Bricasti IRs, good results can be had.

Cheers,

As I understand it, Perfect Space is stereo and IR-1 is true stereo.  True stereo in this context means that there are four impulse files.  One operates on the left channel and sends output to the left channel.  One operates on the left channel and sends output to the right channel.  And so on.  Perfect Space only can utilize two impulse files.  The Voxengo plug from which Perfect Space was derived is true stereo, if I recall correctly.

The thing that makes this a pretty good deal, IMO, is that you supposedly get 100 or so impulse sets with it.  For 65 bucks, that alone makes it worth picking up ... assuming the impulse sets are good quality.  Bought up my copy earlier today, but haven't downloaded it yet.

IR-1 is also x64.
The impulses aren't bad, if you don't have them make sure you get the free  Bricasti quad files for Waves from Roger Roos.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I already just did download these (not even knowing I'd be getting IR-1 - I do already have IR-L though).  I just read about these in SoundonSound.  If they're as good as the SoS writeup made them sound, then they're not free.  I'll be compelled to send Mr. Roos some money since they are offered as donation-ware.

What about all those impulse sets from our forum friend (why oh why can I not remember his name?) that gave us four Lexicons, Acousticas M7, TC 6000, QRS-XL and the H3000?

I still have them.

I also have some nice Lex+ EMT libs from the now defunct Acousticas, they did the first M7 lib I have.

Update for anyone else thinking about buying into this deal.

I purchased, downloaded and installed IR-1 and went to check out the 100 or so IR files.  Nowhere to be found.  Checked back at the Waves site, download page, and there they were ... requiring a separate download.  Mucho data (a zip file that is too big for a single-density DVD).  But the number and variety of acoustic spaces represented are very impressive.

The question is: is this download sitting there available for anyone, or does it just show up for customers who have bought IR-1?  If the former, then I just wasted 65 bucks.  I would have been happy just using the IR library with IR-L, which I already had.

dmbaer,

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings..but anyone who has IR-L can download this...

I have the site bookmarked because I own IR-L.....I'd truly be happy getting IR-1
for this price of $65...I think for the extra features it's a good deal...I had a standing
offer from Waves to buy it for $90....so this is still $25 cheaper then that...

But, yes, you can download them if you own IR-L....

Thanks for the bad news.

I do need to read to documentation again.  You may very well be right that the extra features over what's in IR-L are worth the money spent.  Perhaps my ignorance in this instance will prove to be beneficial.
