Waves nightmare - SOLVED!

Hi,

I had one Waves plug installed - it was working fine. Today I got a second one - and everything has to install from Waves central.

I just copy the Waves shell file to my VST folder (to keep it with everything else) but the problem is this:
The old file was called WaveShell-VST 9.2_x64.dll (Kramer Tape)
and the new one is WaveShell-VST 9.6_x64.dll (Kramer Tape and API 2500)

If I don't delete the old file it wants me to show it the Waves plugin folder every time SONAR starts - but won't accept anything. I'm pretty sure it should be
C:\Program Files (x86)\Waves\Plug-Ins V9   or maybe the shell folder
It won't accept anything though.

If I do delete the old file - all SONAR files (even a blank new one) want to reference WaveShell-VST 9.2_x64.dll.
So all my old files that had a Kramer Tape loaded will fail because this dll is missing!

Has anyone been through this? WTF?
I've uninstalled everything (in Waves central) and reinstalled (then I copy the shell file to my location) - but SONAR insists on referencing the old file - and I can't use the old file, because it won't accept the "Waves plugin location".

If anyone knows how to get past this - could you let me know?
Thanks

I have been through this pain many times

It is incredibly frustrating but we WILL get you sorted

The first thing to try is go to the plugin manager in SONAR and make sure the folder is in the scan path

Then do a reset of the plugins:

https://www.cakewalk.com/...roubleshooting.09.html

If this does not work properly please post back and let me know what folders are being scanned for VSTs by sonar and where your waveshell file is

UPDATE:

OK, I've got myself back to where only the old Kramer tape is installed - using WaveShell-VST 9.2_x64.dll from 2014.

Does anyone have advice how to install my new api 2500 and not break SONAR and/or the Kramer tape?
Should I just install the api? Will it know what to do with 2 versions of Waveshell?

Thanks

I would load Waves Central, move your local licenses back to your cloud account. Then, uninstall Kramer, restart Waves Central (probably not necessary, but just to be safe) and use Easy Activate and Install to reinstall/install both plugins.

If in any doubt, just call Waves support. I had an issue a few months back and they were amazingly helpful.

Thanks for the ideas. I've got to grab something to eat - then I'll reinstall the apologies and try Boydies ideas. (I figured someone has been through this. I thought it was a SONAR problem as it is getting confused.
If nothing works I'll try waves support

+1 to WAVES support being amazing

I was having trouble installing my SSL bundle (which I had on trial) and in the midst of getting annoyed I got an email from WAVES (from a real person) asking how things were going and to get in touch if I had any issues, which I did

Within 30mins I got a reply with the correct advice (the issue was completely my fault as I had installed the plugins but not activated them!! Doh!!!)

Once you get your head around the way WAVES does things you will be up and running and be able to add to your WAVES collection without any problems

Agreed here. Waves even knows a lot about how Sonar deals with their plug-ins. Schedule a call with Waves Support and let them take you to a Web-share so they can get you sorted out.

Re: Waves nightmare 2017/04/06 20:35:53 (permalink)
Thanks again for the help.
I got back to my original position of Kramer tape working. Then I just installed the api.
So now i'm running with both of the shell files (one for each plugin) - but it works OK.

I think I'll leave it here - and get Waves support to tell me how to uninstall the older Kramer tape (I don't think Waves central is uninstalling it - because it was installed before there was a Waves Central) and re-install it, so SONAR works with older files pointing to the older shell.

This seems overly complicated for installing plugins...

IMHO you should uninstall all WAVES, then only install the latest via WAVES central to the default path and include WAVES default location in your VST path ... I do that here on several machine with zero issues.

AND - in case of problems do a VST reset before VST scan (often been recommended by WAVES support)

Hi Rob - the problem is getting the old version uninstalled. It was installed with license mgr, so waves central uninstall leaves traces. The plugin reset might fix this though - I hadn't tried that.

I sent a message to waves support so maybe they can suggest what to do.
I'll have more time to play with this tomorrow - I don't mind tinkering ;-)

The only time I've had issues with Waves installs is when I tried to put the Waves shell where I wanted it to be, instead of letting Waves use default locations. In that case, the Waves tech people took remote control of my PC and had it all sorted in under 10 minutes. There should only be 1 Waves shell on the system so I would contact their excellent support folks and get it sorted before another issue is created.

Waves support gave me this information for removal of waves, but that was over a year ago, I don't know if this still applies, but this worked for me back then.

Just these 3 steps.
1. uninstall Waves?
2. delete the folder C:/users/Your name/appdata/Roaming/Waves. If the appdata folder path is hidden then do 3.
3. press Windows key + R enter %appdat% select Roaming delete Waves folder.
4. reinstall waves?

I haven't heard anything from Waves support yet - but I'll try this tomorrow (Saturday). I'll also check
c:\program files (x86)\waves to see if the older version is still there.

I'm hoping that after re-installing - that the vst reset plugins will fix the issue where SONAR is confused and looking for the old she'll file.

Moving the shell file has always worked for me - but not understanding what's going on (together with forgetting about the copy of the shell file from 2 years ago) - is what got me ;-)

I have a better idea now, thanks to the help here and some messing around - plus I know how to get back to my original working position of the Kramer tape plug - so I'm willing to dive in...

Still, it shouldn't be this hard to install or update a freeking plugin ;-)

Thanks to everyone for their help!
Waves support never got back to me - but I've got everything running correctly. Here's what I did:
(I can step in now, when I see people with Waves problems) ;-)

- I left my activations alone - they're on a USB stick
- uninstall everything via Waves Central
- delete everything (left) in C:\Program Files (x86)\Waves
- delete C:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming\Waves Audio
- reinstall everything via Waves Central (not the "easy" one)
- copy "WaveShell-VST 9.6_x64.dll" (or whatever version you have) from C:\Program Files\VstPlugIns to my location that I like. (C:\vst plugins\64 bit\Waves)
- open SONAR and run a vst reset

Now everything works fine. Old projects are OK and new the plugs openin new ones

Dan has the key.  Although after you move your plugins to the cloud, uninstall waves central, reboot, reinstall waves central, reinstall the plugins, reset vst's and of course make sure that you have the vst search engine pointed to the right place.  This will work.

That's way too many "tasks" ;-)
I didn't need to touch the activations, and there's certainly no need to uninstall Waves Central.

Most of the problem was because I wasn't sure what was going on. If I had done the VST2 reset the other night, I would have been OK ;-)

The steps above worked fine...

When confronted with that Waves request for the V9 folder, just delete appdata/Roaming/Waves Audio folder before reinstalling.

I'm sorry I didn't see your post earlier so I could help you out. The reason some of the other processes seem to work is because they include the step I mention which is really the only one. It doesn't matter where your licence is, cloud, computer or USB.

I'm really surprised they didn't get back to you. Did your WUP expire? Their support was amazing the one time I needed it and I always hear from others they get back right away.

It was not doing the VST reset that got me ;-)
That's why SONAR was still looking for the older shell file...

Ahh, the api is covered but not the Kramer Master Tape. That must be why they're not in a hurry to get back tome ;-)

Is it worth paying for upgrade protection (the next thing I was going to investigate) for these old plugins? I wouldn't think so...

I don't think so. If you have a larger bundle they add plugins over time so it might be worth to, but for separate plugs only if a major version update happens and your DAW stops supporting the old ones.

Thanks Sander - that's what I thought. I'll do a little more research, but it seems like you can take out wup whenever you want - ie if something changes or an upgrade comes out.

Been trying to make my new waves bundle work for hours before I found your post... Erasing the waves folder in the %appdata% worked for me.
Problem solved!
