You can own Platinum after 24 months of paying $49 for a total of $1176. Platinum is on sale right now at EP for $507.94. This is how people that have the least end up paying the most.

They call "subscription" what Cakewalk was calling "membership"
For Platinum I remember "super deal" last year - $136...

Sonar 8LE -> Platinum infinity, REAPER, Windows 10 pro
GA-EP35-DS3L, E7500, 4GB, GTX 1050 Ti, 2x500GB
RME Babyface Pro (M-Audio Audiophile Firewire/410, VS-20), Kawai CN43, TD-11, Roland A500S, Akai MPK Mini, Keystation Pro, etc.

I remember forum moderators calling people out for them using the word 'subscription' when describing the new 'membership'. Water under the bridge now.

But we can definitely see a trend that was started by Cakewalk in the audio industry: Rent-to-Own!

$149 per month for Mercury!! Yikes! Just for reference, that's $3576. In case anybody wanted to know!

This marketing angle seems to be aimed at the "math challenged". It will only cost you $25.50 or so a month to go on the "One Plugin A Month Until I have All The Plugins I want/Need" plan. I was on that sucker for over a year and didn't even know it.

It's Bass, not Bass.

But we can definitely see a trend that was started by Cakewalk in the audio industry: Rent-to-Own!

In no way did Cakewalk start that trend - lots of DAWs have been doing it for some time - Lots internet based CAT tools have been doing it for years - lots of virtual instruments have been doing it for as long.
I don't think it's a business model that has legs - I know of at least one CAT translation tool that went from Free to Rent, and then lost all its subscribers. The maths-heads may think it makes sense, but not everyone likes being tied into a monthly payment plan....makes creativity feel like car insurance.

Cakewalk by Bandlab, Sonar Platinum Lifetimer, Windows 10, HP Laptop, CPU i5, RAM 8GB. Audio interface: Edirol FA-101 Firewire interface with moded drivers. Microphones: Audio-Technica, M-Audio, Behringer, AKG. Pianos: Casio digital, Yamaha B1 upright.  Guitars: Dobro, Tanglewood, Danelectro, Fender. Hats: Fez

I never saw any other DAW offer a subscription/membership/rent-to-own plan before CW did it. I may be wrong. I don't get out much. ; )

Also, I pointed out that I was talking about in the AUDIO Industry, not all of computing software.

If they waited for each plugin to go on sale for $29 and then got them from everyplugin.com, they would make out better,   LOL

Even better with bundles. Gold has been had for $100ish, the upgrade from Gold to Platinum has been below $100. That's 50 (mostly $29) plugins at $2 each.

Yep. This "plan" is a bad deal unless you just want to try them out. But demos are free so it still doesn't make any sense.

Not to us. But evidently, someone is buying. With all these subscription/rent-to-own plans out there, has to be a reason we just don't see.

I ain't buying the subscription plan. I ain't buying no more unless it's the new $29 deal. I have bought some of the newly introduced stuff at 'intro' prices only to see it offered for $29 maybe a month or two later. Like the Shepps Omni Channel. Paid I think $49 for that when it came out thinking it was really good and no way would it go on sale for $29. We all know how wrong I was on that!

So I passed on a few of them like Brauer Motion, Torque, and the F6 EQ, Smack Attack. Hoping they would go on the $29 sale. Sure enough, they did.

Like the rest of ya'll, I don't see any benefit in the subscription model. But because they are offering it (like many others), means somebody is buying it!!

I'm with you Michael, but autos, homes, furniture and appliances have been sold to folks focused more on "how much a month" than the total price for decades.

I remember forum moderators calling people out for them using the word 'subscription' when describing the new 'membership'.

The protestations seemed tragically comical, in a mostly tragic sort of way.

I guess one thing you can say about Waves, they called it what it was, they didn't try to obfuscate the facts over and over and over . . .

Matron,
I know the Studio One forums are as dead as disco so you'd get no audience there, but your constant CW trolling here is aimed at the wrong company. The company you feel wronged by, Gibson, is gone (Well, for all intents and purposes).  Why not take your rants over to KVR where you'll at least be somewhat appreciated?

I am still waiting for Waves dropping their odd Waves shell technology. I really don't like such exotic concepts that obscure the plugin installations and not least slow down project loading (plugin loading) and plugin scanning.

I agree about the Waves Shell.

It does allow for easy saving of presets across all of their plugins. And I am guessing that it helps in support across platforms. And of course it helps facilitate their licenses.

I don't think they are going to get rid of the WaveShell anytime soon. But I wish they would allow a choice when they do install. Like I only want vst3 plugs. Not all the other stuff for other daws installed.

CbB is the slowest scanning plugins. Reaper ain't that speedy either. SO3 is really fast for scanning plugins.

My experience as well.  However, I added Abbey Plates during the $29 sale.  SO4 didn't pick it up until I went to browser>home>Update Plug-ins.  THEN it gave a message that Waveshellblahblahblah would be re-scanned on next startup of SO.

Other plugs I've added have been picked up automatically on startup without that step.

Maybe that's the reason SO can scan so fast. It's not looking for new stuff. Just the stuff it knows about.

Maybe that's the reason SO can scan so fast. It's not looking for new stuff. Just the stuff it knows about.

It has found other VSTs without the extra step.  It appears to me that they're treating Waves differently.

Oh, I see what your saying Bob. I think that they all have to treat Waves differently because of the "shell".

I know that if I start CbB without my license on the machine, then a few days later when I go to start it again and the Waves license are on it, it will scan every Waves plugin again. All vst2, vst3, 32 & 64bit. And I got quite a few Waves plugins and it really becomes a PITA.
