We Aint Got Nothin To Do - Southern rock
Wow, I've been catching up on the forum posting from a few days off and the quality of the tunes everyone is posting is getting itimidating. Some really great stuff from everyone! I wrote this in the past few weeks. I played a lot of music like this in my road days and it's also a thinly disguised excuse for triple guitar harmonies. This has my Campellone archtop and Telecaster on the rhythm parts and my Cort and Tele on the 3 lead guitar tracks. So it's got most of my guitars on it. It's song about those days when there just aint crap happin' - Daryl We Aint Got Nothin To Do http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=582907

This is dance music, good job. Loved the guitars starting at 2:10 through 3:08.

This has some nice picking in it..... Don't take this wrong..... but it sounds like Molly Hatchet's style played by a jazz band.... or maybe Bob Wills... the singing should be grittier..... more whiskey and tobacco ....... still a cool song.

I love this Daryl, but the beat sounds a little awkward... I think a shuffle would work much better on this... guitars sound awesome... drums needs more swing...

Hey, Daryl, Very cool song with a nice 70's southern rock vibe! I love the guitar tones and playing, the harmony guitar work and the vocals. It sort of reminds me of a fusion of the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and maybe Atlanta Rhythm Section in spots. Very nice work, Daryl, have a good one! Bob

I like the guitar work and vocal harmonies. I am guessing the drums are loops based on the lack of any real fills where a drummer would likely put them. Either that or a very minimalist type drummer. I think it could use some flair. Other than that I think the production sounds good to my ears!

Thanks all, I'm glad you like the tune. I always have fun with guitar harmonies. The drums are lacking, because I'm not a drummer, and I don't have a clue how to program drums and even though I have a ton of drum loops, most of them suck and I'm never sure quite what to do with them anyway. I'm a guitar player. I wish I knew drums... but I sure don't. I think I should switch to acoustic ambient music then I could just dispense with the drums I will have another go at them, but I really had a hard time finding anything in my library that fit with this. Frank suggested shuffle but I thought I had tried that. The loops I came up with, all the fills were all over the top. That's one of the things I hate about loops is that every drummer who records loops seems to think that have to cram as many beats into a measure as they can. It's hard to find straight up reserved drum beats. And as I said, I have no idea how to program them. Although when I retire next year, I'm going to put in some time and see if I can learn, but living in the northwoods boondocks, there is no one around I can learn from. Thanks all.

Hi Daryl, Sounds great, man! The guitar harmonies are way cool and the overall production and arrangement are excellent. Your vocal is also outstanding. Others have commented on the drums so I'll just shut up...

Well done, Daryl. The guitar playing is top notch. The lead vocal is well performed, though I would have preferred less reverb for a more in-your-face type of sound. I, too, felt the drums were not quite right for the song, but that is a very minor difference. All in all, this song is one to be proud of.

Daryl, Cool song and nice guitar harmonies. As Herb said, reminds me of a lighter Molly Hatchet/Flirtin With Disaster or maybe a bit of the Allman Brothers too. You never need a thinly disguised excuse for guitar harmonies, they always work;) The drums are a little distracting. I would go for a straight-up Westerrn Swing feel or light train groove/beat with your breaks included. That would really make this performance shine. Regards

I just listended to a bunch of your tunes while working on some other stuff and thoroughly enjoyed them. My friend plays in a swing band in Portland, Or. and I thought I was at one of their shows for a minute but then as mentioned, Molly Hatchet showed up :). I really liked it. Joe..

Guitarhacker but it sounds like Molly Hatchet's style played by a jazz band. Exactly what I was hearing! Guitar tone is great, D. A bit heavy on the mids, so you might want to scoop the organ out a bit.

Robby - Hey it's guitars, what's not to like. Thanks! James, thank you. I couldn't put my finger on what you were hearing. I did roll off the lows on the organ but I will EQ the mids on that. Great suggestion. I too got a little Flirtin with Disaster vibe at one point, but that was not my intent. I was thinking something closer to Charlie Daniels.. maybe. Joe, Thanks for the listen. It's usually just real old guys like me that have eclectic tastes. Mark, thank you. The drums will be worked on. It's one of my goals to get somehow better at it. Lynn, You are spot on. I had bumped the verb a bit to add a little presense but I agree it needs to be bumped back. Thanks!. Gary, Thanks my friend. You're just a guitar fiend... .I know the feeling. Herb - I have no grit to my voice... none nada no matter how hard I try. Some great advice, thanks all. I will head back to square 1 on the drums. I think if I could get a little handier at it, it would elicit a lot of engery and progress. When I was touring and playing almost every night of the week, we would add more and more guitar harmonies in our songs because it helped eliviate boredom and what else can you do when your playing every night and living out of a suitcase. At any rate, we did it a bunch and I still like guitars in harmony, as I do voices.

You really need to turn up the gain on that amp and get some distortion going. You need some crunch in those chords. I don't sense much bottom end but lots of mid. Love the guitar harmonies. Lots of great guitar work.

Mark, Thanks. When I added the 2 Tele tracks, I did those relatively clean to add more contrast, the other tracks have quite a bit of gain on them. Actually there are zero chords played on this tune, it's all single note harmony except the bottom end boogie is a two-string boogie beat with the archtop. - Again, when I started out, I wasn't trying emulate a Molly Hatchet sound. Real catchy tune daryl. Nice production too. I think the general concept of the drums is fine. Just needs some tweaks. Great guit harmonies.

Got it this time...really good song Daryl, some mighty fine playing and singing, and the mix sounds great. I have to echo some of the comments above though, the drums are kind of spoiling it, I think it's the hi-hat pattern which stops them from swinging.

This one just makes me smile. I agree the vocals could be a little grittier, but you may not do gritty. Has a nice laid back swing feel, but the drums are too rigid. You need to move the "swing" slider up in you drum software, lol. Cymbal is very distracting when it goes off. Kind of like a waiter dropping a tray on command. Love the guitar tone and playing. Organ needs an old leslie swirling around in the background. Overall, nice job. Hey, Im having back surgery tomorow, and will be out of work for a while while I recover. If you want me to put a drum track down for this, just so you can see if you like it, let me know.

I'm about half way through redoing the drums from scratch and they are sounding much better I think. ( but then what the hell do I know about drums?!) I will post for a couple of reviews when done. I also incorporated a some other changes suggested. That's what I really like about this forum and the people who frequent it is the honest effort to help one another and not just be critical... with the occasional exception. Thanks. David, I may take you up on that if my next version still sucks. Thank you. Ps Anyone can offer to do my drums anytime Paulo - Thank you very much. Now if I could just find a drummer... James - No swing knob, just loops, cut and paste. But the next version is sounding way better drumwise. Thank you. Scotty Thanks my friend. RiK - You're a guitar player, you're bound to like anything with guitars, but thanks. Mooch - I never put reverb on drums, just congas... nothing else needs fixing Tim - I would love your opinon on the drums when I re-post, because I very much value your opinion. Thank you! A couple of comments about a "jazz band Molly Hatchet" sound. That's an apt description as I like a clean jazz sound but my roots are in that country/southern/boogie rock and roll, and coupled with the fact that I have no grit in my voice, the end product is probably bound to sound like a clean jazz band playing rock. I guess that's why I'm drawn to bands like Steely Dan or Dire Straights and groups that are harder to pin cleanly in a single genre. I like lots of genres, but I tend to mix them up together more than shift back and forth. As long as I don't sound like Murph and the Magictones.

Hi Daryl , your voice , guitars , and overall playing sounds really good on this song you have been sounding so very good w each new tune . I like that you take chances and play some really cool guitar music . I think if you got some drummer w a set of drums to play over your track even if you had to let him play over it in his garage wearing headphones while you recorded him remotely , it would take your tune to the next level .
