I love the original backing track but to be honest the vocal melody is just not there for me. I look forward to hearing how Robbie develops this a bit. It has promise; there are parts that fit in nicely.

The instrumental version is spot on. I really love the production and wonderful pedal steel! Really nice playing. This really sounds good on my Equator D5 monitors. The melody is beautiful. The vocal version is really good too. I think the mix was bigger sounding in the instrumental. The pedal steel in the vocal version seems a little low. Nice guitar touches too. Overall, I think you guys to a great job and I love song. Rimshot

Hi, Guys, I remember loving this when Gary posted the original instrumental a while back, and this really sounds great too! Excellent work by everyone involved. My only very minor, teensy-weensy, micro-mini crit would be that cymbal bell, or bell sound during the verses that is panned off to the right side. For me, personally, it was really distracting and pulled my focus off of the main verses of the song. Maybe if it was mixed a little lower it wouldn't stick out so much. But as always, that's subjective and just my personal observation, so take it with a grain of salt, as always! Fantastic job, boys! Bob

I should finish the redo for Ed tomorrow. He edited me pretty heavily and there are artifacts in his current version. I tried to recreate it the way he's hearing it (it wasn't easy!) The challenge as a singer vs. an instrumentalist is that you have to try to feel it to sing it, and our impression/versions of the song are actually pretty different? But with that aside, it's good practice to fit your square peg in to a round hole every now and then? :-) Oh I went there? I could have elaborated? :-D You're welcome! hahahaha.

I try to understand that everyone does not see the world as do I :-) Which is probably a pretty damn good thing! hahahahah :-) Yes, that's a really good thing, Robby! Oh, I'd almost forgotten how much fun this forum can be. Thanks, guys! Sounds like a lot of 'fun' went into this before it was released. Glad it came together this well. And Robby...there's another idea for you...sing the names out of the phone book. I bet you could make a cool song outta that. :)

timidi Yes, That's it. Re-sing the State of the Union. I mean it is "We Drift Apart". No? Turn in your weapons at the front office Mr. Lone Ranger... All you need is a spear for hunting, and we all know that's what the amendment was about. Ed, this effort sounds much better! I see you kept my fallin down like rain part :-) I thought that was a nice touch. You stretched me out a bit there toward the end... It was almost like that 1st long night in prison... Thank you for your patience and guidance. And for the record? His name was CJ (my daddy?) I know at one point you were asking in a loud voice repeatedly? LOL!

Gary, last time i was around, all your stuff was unbelievably perfect acoustic guitar stuff. unfortunately, you're just as good on electrics... Thanks for listening Mark

I am sorry Ed. Robby's version just sounds cleaner, more intimate and emotive. The issue for me is twofold. 1. Your mix just too busy. Everything is stepping on everything else. You need to make space. 2. You are trying to be fair. - This may strike you as an odd thing for me to say, but let me explain what I mean: It sounds to me that you wish to be true to Gary's vision, and are trying to not put any one part "ahead" of another in the mix. The problem is, this is not what the song requires. Robby gave the song what it requires (though the mix during the second half needs a lot of work to clear up some mud and return the detail of the first half). The vocals on his version are out front where they should be. They are warm and rich. Please Ed, listen carefully to Robby's arrangement and try to learn from it. I know this is not about competition, but it can be a very good learning tool, if you let it be.

jamesg1213 Nicely done gang. Not my cuppa tea musically but it sounds lush and full, and Robby's voice is out front clearly where it should be. Musical bed is beautiful. There's something odd happening at 1:17 though, sounds like a couple of syllables got chopped? Ah, it happens again later (2:52). I think there's a bad edit there, and it's been copied over. Fanks mate. Hope the new re-tracked vocals are even betterer to ter ears.

vechung Very nice. Great job on the vox. Great job on the slide guitar - what did you use for it? Gary will have to answer that. I only mixed his instruments. Guitarhacker Nice job.... I loved the steel. Who did the steel? It has a kind of Maverick's sound and feel. The Mavericks tend to be one of my favorite bands that never really made it as big as they should have...... Desert Rose is another band that didn't get the acclaim they deserved for the talent they had. The song is written well. kudo's to all involved. Herb, Gary did all the instruments, so he is the one who deserves kudos on the guitars.

Interesting tune. Reminds me of something from Lindsey Buckingham's first solo album, which was a throwback to some older sounds. The phrasings feel a little off in spots, but maybe the second melody version will take care of some of that. A very relaxing song, though.

jamesyoyo I listened over the weekend but wanted to let it stew in me for a while before listening again to confirm what I felt the first time. I loved the intro so much. I like the chorus quite a bit. But two things are bugging me: The snare drum is waaaay too snappy and punchy that it distracts and seems out of place with the rest of the instruments. Robby's almost-instantaneous vibrato from the get-go on the first verse really made things seem old-fashioned, like Englebert-old fashioned, so not retro, but cornball. He's a much better singer with better sensibilities than that. I think in the retracked vocals done around the 17th of Feb may have cleaned up the vibrato James. Thanks for the other comments.
