We Three Kings (mild remix)

Here is offering #2 in the Christmas spirit.

I recorded the basics to this in the spring of this year.   I recorded most of the tracks again in the last few days....

I used Kontakt and some of the other string libraries and samples I have to do the parts. Violin, cello, flute, horns, male choir, all the fun stuff.

Guitars are the Taylor and keyboards are all me..... the piano took a bit of time. No band in the box tracks were harmed (or used) in the recording of this song.

Hope you enjoy it.

Remix fixes....

Lowered the AG's on Scotties recommendations...  Piano timing on Janet's recommendations.

Herb, this was NOT "number 2?" You need to have more confidence in your ability sir, it was actually pretty good? Still working on my Christmas song :-( It's been 4 weeks now and I'm "almost" ready to begin the vocals... (Orchestra is non-trivial...)

    Guitarhacker,

Great arrangement!  Love the parts especially when the vocals come in.  With all the instruments, do you need to track the acoustic guitar?  What would it sound like with only one acoustic which would be mixed loud enought to hear all the notes?  Might bring that lovely part out as well.  Good work!

Rimshot.... I have been thinking about that very thing..... As I listened today to it on my MP3 player...... I was wondering about lowering the AG a bit.....

might work on that tomorrow and see if it sounds better. Then again...maybe not.

Just beautiful in every way, Herb!  :)

I've been working on arrangement of this for a couple weeks.  Quite different though.  If I'm lucky I'll be able to play it by Christmas.

On the second listen....a couple of those piano chords seem to be a tiny bit ahead of the beat.

You might consider letting the last note ring just a little longer too.

And good piano playing, too, btw!  Wish I could play the guitar that well!

This is one of the best versions I've heard!

Mine will be just piano (I think), and I want to learn it so I can play it live for a change. Without sheet music.  I could probably do it now, but I keep forgetting what comes next.  Or I keep thinking of cool new things to do.  Late at night.  And in meetings. And while walking.

And it just might drive me crazy.

Oh, and my arm's hurting again, so I mostly have to practice in my head.

    Yeah, might be Christmas 2012.

Yes, please lower that Taylor down...especially the one in my right ear. It seems a bit too bright also. Might want to roll off the high end. Otherwise, a lovely job on this song!

4 weeks... But Thanksgiving was in the middle of that? And when I get my son (every other weekend) I can't really work in the studio? So my time has been somewhat limited. But that's piano, 1st and 2nd violins, violas, a separate large string section track, bells, drums, oboes, bassoons, trumpets, bones, french horns, and bass. And I had to play it all :-( About ready to lay down about 10 tracks of vocals? It's a project... And the orchestra is "non-trivial." If it's drums, bass and guitars w/a lead vox? I can knock it out pretty quick :-)

There might be a little more Orchestra left yet to do.

Hi Herb - I have always thought it was impossible to do anything new with Christmas Carols. Thumping organ, out of tune congregation, just another perfect Carol Service! How wrong I was! Your arrangement is stunning. Huge on drama and passion and with inspired orchestration, this is the way I am sure the Rev. Hopkins imagined it when he wrote it. A truly outstanding piece of music.

Malcolmb.... Yeah, the old tired, dry performances of the carols turned me off to Christmas music.  Most "services" have nothing more then variations of the same thing.... gag me.....   But it's also not an easy task to come up with new and inspiring renditions of the old classics.

One year in church, A lady who has a totally amazing beautiful voice, almost like an opera singer but never classically trained.... and she was pitch perfect too, asked me to help her with Oh Holy Night.  We worked up a simple acoustic guitar version with her singing. She went for, and hit the high note... perfectly. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up, in several places in that song as I listened to the song in the room as we were playing & singing it. Her technique and delivery of that song was amazing. I don't think I have ever heard a more beautiful version of that song than the one we played that night, and not because we did it.

Thank you for your kind words.

This is a really beautiful arrangement Herb, loved it start to finish. The choir was just perfectly placed. It has that cinematic 'journey' feel which is spot-on.
