We bought the farm
Yup, literally. Cue the Green Acres TV show theme song...... We closed on 28+ acres of land with a 1400 sqft cabin on it setting on a knoll. It's very secluded... with the cabin setting about 1000 feet away from the road and not at all visible from the road or the neighbors. The backyard is 20 wooded acres with a stream crossing it as well as a stream along the southern property line. Both streams are year round flowing streams. The front yard is over 8 acres. It's in need of some work. We'll be cleaning the house out and remodeling plus building an addition to it. Here's the southern stream/property line... It's called Kill Branch stream The cabin front Cabin back side Driveway and power line path.... road way down there.... cabin sets back 100 feet to my 5 o'clock position. The back yard One of the farm sheds... a coat of paint and it'll be as good as new. Well, it looks like we have our work cut out for us for the next year or so.... and then it'll be a matter of maintaining it. Plans are to clear off a few acres in the back yard, it's still fairly small new growth pines back beyond the hard woods. My wife says she wants to raise goats and honeybees. I guess I have a new career about to commence. Looks like all the money will be going to this new project..... so no new guitars or software for a while. It'll be paint, boards, nails, fencing, farm buildings, and yup.... even a tractor.... used of course.

Congrats Herb!! I'm happy to see you're able to do something like this. I think it's great to live out in the country (28 acres....wow!!). I told my wife that our next home will be away from city life and a bit deeper in the country (not complete wilderness though.....lol). My dream is to give our 5 children plenty of open land to live in while maintaining a few goats, chickens, vegetable gardens etc.....the only downside is I have no experience in farming and will have to learn as I go. I'll check out the pics at home (blocked at work). Good for you Herb!!

I read the topic title and thought "Oh no! Not more people gone too soon!" Glad to hear the translation was literal (though it definitely looks like a serious "needs work" endeavor!). Guitarhacker My wife says she wants to raise goats and honeybees.
Going for the land of milk and honey there?

From personal experience, few things turn heads more than driving through the nearest city with seven or eight goats poking their heads out of the car windows like dogs. The typical reaction is, "Those are the ugliest dogs I've ever seen..." FYI, they are fond of jumping over the seat and bouncing back and forth between the back seat and the front. Then again, who isn't?

No.... it's not... it's got weak tea colored water which is generally pretty clean stuff.... and it flows year round at a decent flow rate so it's as clean as a stream gets in eastern NC. You can see the bottom in most parts. It's part of the Neuse river water shed and has a 50 foot buffer on both sides.... to protect it. No cutting of large trees or digging/excavating in that buffer. We can thin the underbrush but that's the extent of it. I plan to hike back to the second stream tomorrow and have a look at it. It flows into the one in my pic.

Weird ... all this and no music? The part over the dog house is the studio? Gratz Herb ... btw! Hopefully you can have cable so you can get some internet ... the location looks too far out for any cable service and 1000ft from the road will cost a lot to wire from the street.
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Quick update..... I went out to the farm yesterday to do some exploring in the woods..... 2 things of note: 1. It's really thick out there. I used a machete quite a bit. and I felt like Hansel and Gretel .... but I didn't use bread crumbs... I used marking tape.... bright pink. It took me an hour and a half and still hadn't reached the stream at the halfway point in the back 20. I could see the hardwood trees on the stream... When I got home, I found a tick on me.... so next time... it's some DEET infused bug spray when I'm bush-hogging the property line. 2. Look at the picture of the house in the OP.... see that vine to the left of the door with the christmas light strand in it? Well.........spring has sprung and it's starting to pop out leaves..... oh yeah... it's freaking poison ivy. Who in their right mind grows poison ivy up the side of their house? Removing THAT is going to be fun. I might have to get one of those hazardous waste clean-up suits, full face and hand protection and then tackle it. That's the last thing I need.

You could cut it through with loppers or a hedgetrimmer at ground level and again about 3ft above. Everything above the cut will die and turn brown then it would be easier to handle. Then spray the roots with something nasty.

Yep, that's the way I'd do it. Pulling it off the house can still release the oils that cause the reaction. Learned that the hard way my own self... Regards, Dan

I live close to the Mattaponni River here in the Old Dominion and it has that same color. I believe it is natural from dead vegetation. The Mattaponni is listed as one of the cleanest rivers in the country, which would be why the Corps of Engineers want to dam it up and pipe it down to Norfolk for drinking. Regards, Dan
