I fee sorry that he pretty much lost his hearing.

I just saw Leo Kottke on Saturday night.

Leo is "completely" deaf in his left ear.

Doesn't stop him. Nor Beethoven.

Beethoven couldn't play the drums like Phil.

I heard that you don't need to hear to play drums
(because you're always behind all the amps anyway)

I'm surprised Cakewalk hasn't received a fax from Phil Collins complaining about this thread yet...

There's a reason why we call them drum phils.

I did like his drums and backing vocals on John Martyn's 'Grace and Danger' album, that was a good fit and no gated reverb to be heard.

I think my furry colleague will agree.

Can't Hurry Love was one of those rare covers that was better than the original,

I'm going to go with 'No' on that.

I agree. In my opinion it was a good cover, but to pick up on the point you made earlier it was close to parody. Of course the video also adds to that perception.

I would argue it was closer to karaoke than parody.

A lot of the Phil hatred comes from the fact that after doing so much great stuff, he ended up doing uninspired  Motown covers and tepid piano ballads.  When you have a lot of talent and settle for mediocrity, people will resent you.  Imagine how much hatred Jimmy Page would get if he recruited a douche-rock vocalist and released an album that sounded like Creed or Nickleback?  Or if Thom Yorke decided to join a band that sounded like Coldplay-lite?

+1
Collins basically became a lounge artist imo. No musical growth at all since the mid 80's. He just stagnated and hasn't moved since 'No Jacket Required'. baaah

I think some of his best work was with Brand X. After the Lamb - Genesis as I knew it and grew up with - ceased to be.

I understand that there are mellow drummers. I don't understand why they're so sleepy, but everybody needs a nap from time to time. Mick Fleetwood, for example, is the poster child for Xanax. Once Phil wandered away from the drum kit, he just seemed to get increasingly drowsy. Personally, I think he bored himself to sleep. I mean, the songs just got more and more Muzak-ready as time went on. I'm pretty sure that he's been in a coma for the last few albums and the band replaced him with a Muppet on stage. Given the fact that the audience was sound asleep as well, no one seemed to notice.

I'm not a Phil-hater. He's not one of my favorites, but he had some clever moments when he was still conscious.

Hi,

That garilla is the worst drummer EVER!

I'm not sure that Phil should be complaining that much. He got out of it all what 1% of all the musicians can never get or achieve. Maybe he is just unhappy that his wife department was not as nice, or helpful, of maybe he was the cause being depressed and out of it, for the wrong reasons, and probably being overly sensitive.

That he may have lost this or that, is understandable to a point ... Ozric Tentacles also lost a lot of their charm when their 2nd drummer hurt his back, and everyone since has been just a 4/4 drummer with no talent whatsoever, or ability to get out of the numbers!

It's a fact of life ... getting that old ... now, if you don't think there are some of us old farts that stand up, go watch Edgar Froese play his guitar on the link on his thread. A duet with Linda Spa, no less. Or if it's boring, watch him thrash a piano with a serious cat'o'9'tails!

I tend to think that Phil overdid his thing, and did not take a break when he should have and rest, so he would not wear himself out! Something like it. Bury yourself at work when you are unhappy at home ... sounds familiar? Hopefully, that will never happen to Bapu who buries himself at play, instead!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Hi,

I heard on the radio yesterday that Phil will be working with Adele on her new album.  they didn't say on the report what he would be doing, just "working" with her.

Imagine how much hatred Jimmy Page would get if he recruited a douche-rock vocalist

Douche-Rock is comprised of those bands who have a singer that sounds like Eddie Vedder with some extra poser grit thrown in.  Their best known songs are usually mid tempo ballads with grungy guitars and not a lot of guitar solos.  They get bonus points for lyrics that sound like hallmark cards.  The triumvirate of douche-rock artists would be Creed, Nickleback, and Daughtry.

Douche-rock is all about that post-grunge yet bland sound.  The douchiness of the artist in question is not the main factor.  For example, John Mayer is widely regarded as being a douche.  He is not, however, a douche-rock artist.  His style is more wuss-rock with some blues influences.

Likewise, Chris Daughtry could be a really good guy.  It doesn't matter, he is one of the major proponents of the douche rock sound.

Mr Coversong, therefore, does not really qualify as a douche-rock vocalist, no matter how much of a douche he may be.
