We need a proper download manager.

So, in many parts of the world, internet is still not that fast yest. South Africa is one of those places (unless you're willing to pay BIG bucks).

I don't mind letting a download run overnight, but can CW seriously not come up with a download manager that handles things like Pause and PC restarts properly? That should go for the 3d party add-ons like Addictive Drums too. I just had to restart my PC and lost 3/4 of the Addictive Drums download. One would think they could at least have the sort of system in place that saves what has already been downloaded..

Just a thought.

FDM will do what you want. Of course, the servers have to be able to restart downloads, most do.

You can also get an add-on for Firefox called DownloadThemAll. It works great.

FDM , again..

you can schedule it to download overnight and it'll even switch off the pc when it's done..

cakes servers support result and multi threads, so I'll use that over any browser.

(apart from certain companies who have a counter and count multi-threads as a download attempt.. e.g. loopmasters)

Thanks guys, but 3d party downloads like XLN use their own system, and that is a particularly crappy one. I believe Cakewalk should standardise anything they "deploy" in terms of delivery system, even 3d party stuff. It would make it a far smoother process.

I'd rather they spent more time dev'ing the app and not "mucking" about with a downloader for it..

fdm does resume / multi thread etc. so why solve a problem that doesn't really exist

Fog, you are really not getting my point. Not all downloads are browser based. Addictive is an example - has it's own downloader with no resume. It's stupid considering it's 1.2 GB.

And I DO think it's the seller's responsibility to make the delivery easy. In the end, it enhances their customer experience.

When X3 just came out the server kept disconnecting me until I caved and bought Getright Pro.
I just got too annoyed/excited when I couldn't install after buying.

Actually the XLN download manager does resume. I know this for a fact because when I was doing my download we had a power flicker right in the middle, which knocked out wifi for about 30 seconds and the download had stopped. But I just keep the window open in the hopes that it would start up again once wifi came back up, and it did.

Yeah, not sure. Mine definitely resumed. It would definitely be a bad idea for them not to support resume since (like you said) it's a large download. It's bad enough they don't support offline authorization. That is something I don't like, but oh well.

Not sure why we are asking CW to re-invent the wheel here.  As others have said, there are plenty of great download managers out there, many of which are free.  I use FDM (Free Download Manager) myself, and it's everything I could need.  I actually don't like being forced to use an imbedded download manager; I much prefer freedom of choice.

Hi LJB,

I am also having problems to download X3.
I have a fair connection for african standards (8mbps) but my dl rates from Cake's servers are not better than a very slow 6-10KB/sec. I have tried downloading X3 part2 now and it says it will take 3 days and 12 hours. It will never get here...
Ryan (from CW) was very kind and sent me alternative links but they are also very slow.

Hope the find an alternative way. Dropbox would be fantastic.

By the way, I am in Maputo.

best, joni

If it is installed correctly (i.e. FDM is configured to monitor FireFox), click the link in FireFox and FDM will intercept the download request and popup and dialog. Review the dialog, make changes if necessary, then press OK.

To check if FireFox is monitored by FDM, open the FDM main window, Options > Setting > Downloads > Monitoring. Select the browsers to monitor. Monitoring will also add some options to the FireFox context menu (the one the pops up when right-clicking a link).

Edit: I use FireFox 24.0 and FDM

Yes.
Now I am using the new links from Soundfront that Ryan sent me. They do work much better.
Actually know I am getting dl speed like 300-500KB/sec witch is about half my top speed. Anyway, much better than the 6-10KB/sec I was getting with the amazon links.
That oiltanker anker also affects us form time to time lol
cheers,

Cakewalk should continue to focus on it's great SONAR product - and NOT waste cycles on download managers.  The internet has download managers whipped ;-).
FDM works wonderfully.
