Web Page Question HiDef versus MP3

I asked this upstairs but figured I post it here.

Im not understanding/knowing what the Hi Def/Quality songs are that are posted on various sites. Can someone enlighten me on what exactly they are

ie-File type, bit rates or anything as compared to sites that only take MP3s as uploads.

Thanks in advance

    what's an example of what you're talking about mike?  do you mean like on youtube?  if so, that's only the video, not the audio.

    Mornin Reece,

    Okay, Ill use Bobs wonderful site as an example (Thanks Bob)

    See how it has a LowFi and HiFi
    http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=786248&songID=11477777&showPlayer=true

    I see similar sites as well.
    I see that MP3 @ 128 are in the LowFi category. What are the HiFi Files?

    LoFi = MP3 @ 128k bit rate or less   (Soundclick)

    HiFi = MP3 @ 160k or better (Soundclick max, I believe)

    HiRes = MP3 @ 320k

    As far as I'm aware, even if you upload a 320k MP3 to Soundclick it still gets re-encoded to 160k.

    unless it has changed since I've used it last (it's been a while, even tho I still have stuff on there, I don't upload to it any more), it re-encodes to 128k, not 160k.  I think the premium accounts (pay accts) will allow 160 or 192k, maybe?  but the free ones at least used to be 128k only.

    Now when you have your own webpage made up-do they limit the quality or are there sites that are better than other as far as being able to load as high as desired (160, 192, 320 ) and in your opinion does it really benefit to go that high?

    Concerning Soundclicks VIP accounts, they allow you to upload high quality 320kbps mp3s, which will be re-encoded for streaming purposes as mentioned above (128kbps, although I believe they upped it a tad in the last year or so, not sure as I also don't use their services anymore). Also, if you happen to allow downloads, whether you charge for them or not, the untouched original upload at 320kbps will be available. Only for downloads though.

    That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

    Did some experimenting trying to learn and see the differences Karyn. OMG I was amazed at the quality just on Sound Cloud alone for MP3s. Ive always done Wave 44100/16 files for their uploads.
    I tried Mastering with Wave and Mixdown to MP3s @ -
    44100/16/192 & 44100/16/320  and I must say "WOW" what a difference.

    One thing I have noticed is that the 44100/16/128 files sound rumbly/muddy.

    Thanks a bunch for the info everyone!!!
    Now I have to retrain my ears again LOL
